WOW just WOW!!

 

You are really doing an amazing job of the wood sculpting, keep at it.

 

First - everytime I check in on this project I end up going back and re-reading the prior posts just to see the attention to detail and fabrication technique. Fantastic work! Like others I was torn about the idea of covering up the base structure of metal with wood - until I read the Mk3 thread. I can't wait to see the final product.

A noobish question - what did you use to cut your aluminum sheets to size before the detail cuts and bending?

Yes it seems never ending.

Sometimes I thought there is only a small amount of work to do and the wind is blowing so
"I'll skip the dust mask" but I've learned the lesson and always wear a dust mask now
because this stuff has made me very sick in the past. Not just this wood either, when you
use a power saw or router, very fine particles are created, and these can get way down into
your lungs. You can really feel it. ALWAYS WEAR A MASK!

PS: For those making parts/cases out of MDF, this stuff is particularly dangerous. It has some
ingredients that are known carcinogens so ALWAYS WEAR A MASK when working with
this stuff. In fact MDF is not safe until it is sealed (paint, laquer, varnish, laminate etc).

The place I buy all of my alu from have a diagram on the wall of a standard sheet with all the
cuts that they are prepared to make, so I can select whatever suits me. I never buy a whole
sheet, though I have bought one in several pieces. It's much easier to work with smaller
pieces and it doesn't cost any more.

I am actually NOT looking forward to the end of this.....

Then I won't have anything this worthy to look forward to in the morning with my morning coffee, making my day empty, hollow and pointless.

That being said, possibly the most interesting build I have lurked sice I first laid eyes on DarkBlade.

 

Nice work oldnewby, the attention to detail really makes your work stand out from the crowd. I particularity like your choice of wood, nice warm colour with good grain and texture. Complements the aluminium really well (even though no ones going to see the aluminium).

This still has a way to go so lots more coffee. But don't worry, there will be a new one
not long after this ones done. Speaking of DarkBlade, I read that worklog not long after
it was finished and again just last week., An incredible, complex and brilliantly conceived
and executed object, without doubt many levels above anything else I've seen to do with
custom PC's.

I know this is probably getting a bit boring but I just want to show that I'm still working
and that there is a lot more work here than may appear.

I couldn't get enough weight off so I hand routed out as much as possible
trying to follow the outside contour.







The shape of the inside voids are different for each side being dependent
on where the panel meets parts of the chassis, but this is OK.
A fair bit of chisel work needs to be done to clean up the hand routed edges.







These measures have taken the weight down from 8.5kg's to 3.4kg's.
This weight will come down some more because the side panels still need
a fair amount of finishing work, but the weight will go up again
because another two pieces of wood need to be attached to each side.



So now the outside of the mobo side can be shaped to match the (unfinished) drive side. And then work can progress on both sides
simultaneously until finished.

 

Nice job! Looks like it takes a lot of work shaping those panels!!

Great job getting the two panels to match. Do you have a set of thickness calipers?

Large ones like this one would help you get an even thickness across the panel so you don't accidentally remove too much material in one area.
