i recently got offered a 1965 ford zephyr thats been converted into a flatbed pickup with a newer diesel engine in it, a sierra engine i believe.
my mate wants £800 for it, but i suspect insurance would be alot for a 21 year old without a license yet.

I'm pretty much looking for advice on it as a first car and on good insurance companies, ive tried to get an online quote with one but they couldn't do it without more info that i don't have.
    any advice is much appreciated.

I'll also try and get some pictures of it soon, as it looks pretty good.

I've heard Bell are good for younger drivers, but I'd steer clear of anything modified for your first car. They still try and sting me and I'm 21 with 4 years driving!

I'd be amazed if you can get an online quote with a specification like that - you'll probably find 99% of them will want you to ring them by the time you get to the end of the form filling. You should save some time and get straight onto some classic car/modded car specialists instead. Grab a copy of Retro Car or Practical Classics, and try some of the companies that advertise in them.

And as mentioned, insuring a car like that without a license and with that many mods... good luck!

As has been said id look at classic car insurance, you'll be surprised how cheap they can be, i had a 1500 spitfire when i was 22 with 0 no claims and it only came out at £150, it wasnt modified though.

yeah, it can be pretty cheap and classic cars are so much nicer than most modern cars in the price range i can afford.
if i cant get this zephyr due to cost i will start looking for a unmodded classic car

thats because you are still young. I've been driving for over 10 years and mine is only starting to go down. (no accidents, no tickets, no claims) They also look at how long you have been insured. I was put on my parents car's insurance the day I got my licence and was never taken off. That helped me get a better price when I got my new car. I'm paying about $1000 cdn right now.

I wasn't trying to say I wasn't young :D My insurance is pretty cheap since my car is standard, but I've phoned up for prospective quotes for various "upgrades" and the price jumps are ridiculous!

yeah no kidding, back when I was about 20 I was paying 1800cdn. then insurance rates went up for everyone and I started paying 2500. I went into another company looking for a better rate, they wanted 4000 a year. Bascially at that age group they dont want to insure people. Once you hit 25 it seams the world will start to respect you a bit more.

There really is no point asking here for advice on which insurance company will give you the best quote, unless someone here
    • is the the same age as you
    • same sex as you
    • living in the same post code as you
    • has a similar occupation as you
    • has been driving for the same time as you
    • will be insuring exactly the same car as you

You get the picture, you really need to contact as many insurance companies as possible and get the best quote, especially with something as individual as this car.

Classic car isurance, try footman james, my first car is a modified classic mini, at 18 i paid £450 TPFT for it, and i still pay that now with alloys a 1275 engine and bucket seats.

My brother on the other hand pays £400 on a standard cooper for fully comp, at 22.

You would be surprised how relaxed some people are and some aren't, when i tried to get another quote last year, no one could even beat my sub 500£ quote! Some didn't even attempt too!

how'd you get covered at 18? I've been on there recently and I'd swear you had to be 25 for classic car insurance?
