Hi, id like to upgrade my rig. current specs corsair modular 650W psu msi p67a gd53 mobo gainward phantom 970 some cheap corsair ram (4gb - 2 sticks) i5 2500k cpu 1tb hdd would like to upgrade the mobo, ram and cpu. help and advice much appreciated ty in advance
Agreed, don't bother with the MOBO, RAM or CPU. I would suggest you get an SSD and install OS and key games on it. You will definitely notice the difference.
I agree with the suggestion to go with an SSD, but if that RAM is 4Gb total (2 x 2Gb), I would consider bumping it up to 8Gb - assuming you have a 64-bit OS installed.
Im still running a stock clocked 2500k with a 970 and I don't see any issues gaming. Skylake is tempting me but even then I'm going to wait for what ever is up next. See is definitely the way to go first.
hi again, just wondering if u should or even can delete stuff off your ssd with no worries? does that affect it somehow? do u need to defrag them at all? will that damage them? are there steps i need to take to ensure longevity of my ssd and if so what are they? im hoping to get one on black friday. are there any recommendations? thanks again
Defragging an SSD will likely screw it, yes. In any modern OS the option should not even be there. The best bit of advice I can give is to keep it clean and don't keep installing things onto it and then deleting them. TRIM will take care of garbage collection and will happen natively in Windows 7 and on. Just make sure you only have your OS and apps that go with it (things like CPUID etc).
You treat it just like a hard drive. So yes, you can delete files off it with no worries. You do not need to defrag SSDs. And Windows is smart enough to properly manage the SSD for you. Do not worry about longevity. Today's SSDs do not have the problems first generation SSDs did. This is one reason (besides less heat and less power) even big data centers are moving to SSDs over hard drives. I recommend at least 250GB. I like the 850 Pro if your budget allows - it has a great 10 year warranty! Otherwise, the Evo is great too.
