I considering upgrading to an i7 930 cause they look bitching (from a q6600). Which means need motherboard and memory too.

decide the motherbaord is going to be a Asus Rampage III Gene Intel X58.

Now the memory this leaves me the memory.

Is it better to have say 6gig of speed memory or 12gig of not quite so fast?

6 GB its more than enougth ;)

You will benefit from the speed plus capacity of 6GB memory, while 12 its more capacity its still not worth it againts speed decrease

if you must choose between size and speed, always go for size.

50% faster RAM means virtually nothing with today's processor advanced caches, but 50% more RAM means you can run 50% more programs at the same time.
