    my 11yr old has pinched mine has only good things to say about the camera, and has destryoed my old telescope i had in the attic gathering dust trying make them work together

    How dare you speak that way of the King of Pointing Devices!
    I was tempted by the kit-form version, but decided to splash out on the lazy one instead - partly for the extras, partly 'cos then I know I can't screw it up!

    I've been on the fence about getting one - let's face it, a quad-core 1.5GHz CPU, 4GB of RAM, and five-hour battery life ain't setting the world alight - but the trackball and mechanical keyboard swayed me. Plus it should basically last forever - each individual battery cell is replaceable. I reviewed, but didn't get to keep, that open laptop thing Bunnie did, and I've always regretted not picking one up!

    This reminds me of my time with a company in Bristol, that serviced and repaired laptops for Dell in the late 90s. All but the very latest machines had a heavy, plastic coated, metal trackball that was really easy to use.

    Couldn't you just DIY one out of a new Raspberry Pi @Gareth Halfacree? This is bit-tech after all, it's what we do.

    Raspberry Pi ain't open, tho'. The whole point of the Reform is that it is: everything's released, from firmware source to case design files to not only schematics but PCB layouts. It boots with only a single binary blob - for the memory controller - and runs without any, unless you want to use an external HDMI display in which case you need another blob. The SOM's COTS, but open-spec - and uses a standard SODIMM layout, so in theory anyone could design their own SOM to replace it.

    Starting at $1000 for the DIY kit, that's quite a bit of a premium to pay for the principle of (almost) everything being open :thumb:. Fine if that's your thing, but that's way too rich for my blood - I'll stick to my second-hand/refurb ThinkPads for laptop duties :grin:.

    Premium, in order of how much it affects the price from least to most:
    • Fully open
    • Mechanical keyboard, custom trackpad or trackball
    • Custom design
    • Hand-built
    • Very small production run
    If they were building a few million, like Lenovo, it'd be a lot cheaper!

    Although the fact that it's fully open doesn't add anything to the BOM or manufacturing costs, it does drive the need to for a completely custom designed and built laptop :thumb:. Like I said, if being fully open is a priority for you then go for it - it's just not enough of a priority for me to justify the price tag :grin:.
