Hay guys Is it worth wait till around xmas for the newer graphics cards or is it the best time now with the nvidia460, im currently using a 8800GT. What sort of proformance boost will i see going from 8800GT to nvidia460?
A hefty one, unless you're CPU-limited. Hence the request for the rest of your rig. If, for instance, you're using a C2D E6300 and you're trying to play large-scale RTS games, it won't do anything for you.
Unless of course you overclock the C2D E6300 to 3.6GHz in about 5 mnutes flat, then you have the best of both worlds.
Please post more of your spec and what you are trying to achieve - as per other comments. If there are no other limiting factors, then you are looking at a massive graphics boost. It is distinctly possible that you will run into other limitations however. If you are rocking an 8800 GT then we probably assume an Intel 775 socket and a core2 dual-core?
In which case the 460 will money well-spent and Christmas probably won't yield anything more balanced in the performance-on-a-budget vein. It also depends what games you need it for, too - since an 8800GT isn't good enough, I'm guessing high-end titles. Word of advice I can give without any other information: if those titles include GTAIV, don't bother upgrading your graphics card unless you've already got a tri- or quad-core processor. It's a minimum realistic requirement.
Sorry its taken me a little while to respond, been away for a day or 2. My current set up is Q6600 - No overclock as yet but thats the next step. 4gb of ocz reaper memory. Asus premium p5k motherboard. Running windows 7 64bit 8800GT As it is this PC is 2 years old, Has never let me down but iv noticed that iv had to lower my graphics sets some what these days. Would like to play through MW2 and bad company, been saving them for the new card. Plus crysis and my 8800GT doesnt like it much So is it worth a graphics update or maybe a new computer is in order.
The Q6600 is still fine ... although it'd be a crime not to try nudging the speed up a bit Certainly you shouldn't be CPU limited and a 460 will rock your world. Make sure you get the 1GB version.
Thats pretty much exactly the same as my rig. Except my Q6600 is running at 3.2GHz. I too want to get a GTX460, but I'm still trying to decide which to get. Don't want to hijack the thread. But can someone tell me if the apps like msi Afterburner are compatible with all the cards, not just the ones from MSI? Basically, does it matter which card I buy if I want to try and OC it?
Well, if you try this version of Afterburner, you should be able to overclock. If not, just wait until a new version is released.
