Storage OCZ 60GB Vertex 2E vs 64GB SSD Crucial RealSSD C300 for OS drive?

Hey guys i'm looking to pickup an SSD for a boot drive and i'm trying to decide between the two mentioned. The OCZ has a lower read speed but a much faster write speed (at a claimed 285MB/s Write 275MB/s) and the Crucial has a fast Read speed but a much slower write speed (Read 355MB/s, Write 70MB/s). So i was wandering which would be best for a os drive and if there is any other alternatives at around the same price? (£100-£120)

I am not using a sata 3 compatible motherboard.

I chose the Crucial as it will always hit the faster speeds due to not being dependent on the type of file being accessed. I prefer the consistency.

 

Tough shout, but I'd opt for the C300, if only for the more reliable performance. SandForce is fast but it's tendency to benchmark really well, but not deliver those results in real world makes me favour the C300. Plus, when you upgrade to a SATA 6Gbps board, you'll get a whopping extra 70MB/sec read. Tasty.

 

Same I would got Crucial C300 as well and buy your self the PCI-E SATA 6GB card from the MAG.
Other wise just forget the whole thing, as you will be dissapointed with the "small" speed increase using SATA 3GB. That is my humble opinion (If you do something go all the way and do it right.

 

When I got my C300, I chose the Asus Sata 3 board, http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus...B3-Superspeed-PCI-E-Combo-Controller-with-NCQ only £23.50, considerably cheaper than the Highpoint Rocket, and when I benchmarked I got the full 355MB/s read.

 

Thanks for the input guys. I currently am leaning towards the crucial with some form of sata 3 pcie expansion since that could possibly be useful for other things in the future..

 

The onboard sata 6GB ports are well documented as being absolutely rubbish, I can confirm this having tried them first hand (just can't understand why they are even supplied, can only assume some sort of advertising hype &/or supplier related contractual cock-up). Unless you want the added cost & inconvenience of using an add on card still with poor write speeds I would suggest you sway towards a Sandforce based SSD.

 

Tonight, i've been swung around too actually wanting an SSD for my boot drive now.

 

The difference is incredible mate, it's like no upgrade I've ever done on my PC. On my system in my signature, I get a "Steam cannot connect" error because Steam loads faster than W7 can connect to my wired network

The 120GB Vertex 2 on Scan is quite good value at £189.

 

Hands down get the OCZ, the crucial are only worth it if getting the larger ones which have much faster writes.
Also, there is a 90GB OCZ which is worth considering (on offer at overclockers.co.uk).

 

Make sure your PCI-E X1 slot is version 2.0 that supports the full bandwith, if its version 1.0 or 1.1 it wont support the full bandwith of the add on sata 6gbps card (highpoint rocket)

In balance I think that the sandforce is better due to the better writes. This is in the 60Gb category. At 128 and 256gb c300 the write speeds rise.

Currently the 60GB Vertes 2E by OCZ is the best mainstream (best bang for buck) SSD for an OS. I'm sure a majority of experienced users on here will agree.

I ended up going for the ocz. The price just kept falling and when it went sub 100 i pulled the trigger. I have it installed now and all is good. The performance difference is great... (well bar having to map out the registry to stop putting too much files/games on it but thats more windows 7 then anything)
