PSU PC has just stopped working suddenly!

I have no idea how, but my PC won't switch on. Lights and fans flicker on for half a second or so, then go Straight off. I have tried making sure all of the plugs are connected properly, rebuilt the damn thing to no avail. The motherboard power light is on, so are the ones on the GPU. Only solution I have is that the power supply isn't supplying enough power, but I'm scratching my head here.

Weird thing is, it worked fine last night when I was using it.

 

Thats the nature of the beast Sounds like a PSU issue to me but strip it back to basics even with just 1 memory module and see what happens. Also try clearing the CMOS as it might just be corrupt.

EDIT: It might have been best to have posted this in tech support. Perhaps a mod can move?

 

Tried it without a GPU and just one ram dimm. No luck. Resetting CMOS didn't work either :/

 

Have you got another PSU to try

 

I reckon it's the motherboard. It seems unlikely the load on the psu would change after the the brief power up.

I would try it with no fans as well in case one of them is shorting out.

 

I had a similar thing happen and it was part of the psu packing up.

It will run fans, gpu's etc but won't allow the pc to boot, changed the psu over and all was well, tried the psu in other pc's and exact same problem.

 

Had that happen before a couple of times. The first time was due to some RAM going, the second time was just because it felt like it and worked fine after unplugging EVERYTHING and adding things back in one at a time.

My advice would be to only have the CPU installed and check that you get the bleeps on startup if it turns on. Then add one RAM stick in the manufacturer's recommended one DIMM only slot. If that still doesn't work, try different DIMM slots and a different AM stick.

Otherwise new mobo time.

 

Where in the UK are you, there may be a bit-techer close by with a spare PSU to test. I would if you lived near me.

 

I tried without anything but CPU but no joy. I'm getting conflicting opinions here, would it be PSU or motherboard? I'm leaning more towards a faulty PSU.

 

If you are in Devon I might be able to loan you a pretty basic PSU so you can rule it out.

 

Good but bad news. I know that its the PSU, I tried to start it without a mobo, with a wire in the 24 pin, wouldn't start at all.

 

Can someone recommend me a decent power supply for under £100?

Thanks for the sentiment but I'd never get a used power supply. No offence of course, just personal preference. I actually just ordered an EVGA super nova g2 750w PSU. All the reviews I've read make it a rock solid and reliable PSU with a 10 year warranty. 80+ gold too.

 

Need to register to get the 10 years of warranty, within 30 days IIRC.

 

That 750 is WAY overkill for a stock i3 system but should do the job lol
