    but... i've got a question...

can i connect a fancontroller or a dvd drive on a molex AND get a switch over the power so that i can totally turn off the fancontroller or dvd drive?

and if so...what switches should i use and how should i wire those switches

i hope i'm not boring the crap out off everyone with a question like this but i'm kind of new to electronical stuff... (love to learn but still a bit carefull)

Trying to get this straight, you are connecting the Fan controller and DVD rive to the same molex and want to be able to switch each individually?

    . . . . . . . . . ___Switch____DVD
    . . . . . . . . /
    -Molex---<
    . . . . . . . . \___Switch____Fan Controller

If so, you can use basically any switch. Wire the grounds together in between the molex and the perhiprial (DVD or Controller) And put the switch in the ground lines.

    5V --------------------------------
    Ground--------_____Switch___-----
    Ground-------/. . . . . . . . . . . \----
    12V -------------------------------

And do that between the DVD and Mole and the Controller and Molex.

    Is that of any help?

yes, and no...your reaction is very helpful but i'd like to wire them in another way :hehe:
i'd like to wire it like this :

    -----molex----dvd
    -----molex----fancontroller

so, i just have to connect my switch like this:

    ---molex---switch---dvd
and place the switch in 1 of the 2 black wires (ground)?
Than, why shouldn't i put the switch over the power, won't that work?
or if you put a switch over the ground, that's better?

You will need to putt the switch over both the ground wires for it to work as they each have thier own ground and if you only switch one ground it will only switch 12V or 5V on/off. The grounds are connected in the power supply so it is okay to wire them up.
You will need to get both ground (Black) wires and cut/extend them and put the switch in between.

You could run the dvd with the switch, but you could only switch the switch when te PC is turned off, as it is an IDE device.

If the IDE cable only has the DVD drive, you can yank the cable off when the computer is running, if it is not playing a disc at the same time.
If it has, well, the other one will stop functioning too
Only thing is, that to get windows to recognize it again, you have to plug it in and reboot the comp.
But why would someone want to shut an DVD drive off, as it makes no noise when it is not reading a disk, and when it is, there is no logical reason to shut it off.

there is nog logical reason to shut if off...but i was playing with the idea of *being able to turn off practically every component*... so this just sprung into my head...

anyway...TNX and i'll most definately get a switch over the fan controller

Switch the hot wires, not the grounds. The DVD and fan controller cases are probably grounded too.

Thats a point, you would need a double switch though.

Nope, no mixed opinions, cpemma is the one who knows electronics really. I hadn't thought about the casing being grounded, and they usually are (for the DVD drive at least) So you would need a double pole, single throw switch. Like this.
    Wired up like this
