So I built myself a pc, it's been almost half a year now (I think). never had any problems until now windows suddenly tells me it needs to run a disc consistency check at boot. I let it and seems to mess with some files and finish, so no problems really. just, should I be worried? After googling it (yes, I did google it first), I found some people telling me it might be a sign of a bad HDD, especially if it comes up repeatedly. did take some pics with my camera (as I thought I might be in major ****, but I'm using it now just fine) thanks
It could be a hard disk issue, make sure you backup any crucial work NOW just in case. You want to run a hard disk tool that tells you about its SMART status, which is used to verify how well a hard drive is working. seatools is one I have used before. This error can also happen if you had a power cut or other disruption to the PC.
hmm, use this pc mostly for gaming so wouldn't think I have anything especially important on here. I'll run the storage checks tomorrow. chkdsk is a windows command?
It checks for and (I think) can repair damaged sectors in hdds. Like lysol says, run it in admin mode - easiest way is start>cmd>ctrl+shift+enter.
Can just be a sign of a bad shutdown as well. Quite often happens with a power outage system will see a unclean filesystem and run chkdsk on the drive to make sure all is OK.
Can sometimes be sign of a disk going bad if happens repeatedly, or bad RAM, but generally it's pretty harmless and can happen if you got a crash, power outage or even just silent "bit rot". So doesn't even mean anything is necessarily wrong, Windows will sometimes run it as precaution after a bad shutdown. And The_Beast speaks wisely...
Save any data that you cant replace - including licences for any software/games you have paid good money for. You may only need to use a memory stick!
I rly don't know, guess I have a few photo albums on here, but it's nostly just games I have on steam or retail. Just had a wierd bootup where it took way too long for the desktop background/icons to appear.

I don't think it's a problem. Probably you've just promptly shut down your PC or something. That's what causes it for me at least. Don't worry about it. Backups are never a bad idea though. +1 for dropbox, it's awesome.
it just did the chckdisk at boot again, I dont have anything very important on this computer anyway. maybe a fitting time to throw an SSD in there?
