This is just so mindblowingly awesome.

Wonder what would've happened if a similar mystery was presented to the console crowd..? :)

Have any of you played/tracked the development of the Minerva HL2 mod? The creator, Adam Foster did a few of those and is now employed by Valve. Sadly I can't play the mod because I have no Episode 1 in my steam account.

    This is amazing!

How do they come up with such complex puzzles?

And how do people decipher them? I've done a bit of fiddling with SSTV before (after some of the rumours regarding the video to Come To Daddy by Aphex Twin) but who the hell thinks "I wonder what this wav file would look like slow-scanned"?!

I'm blatantly going to get no work done today. Thanks Valve...

Their brains would've melted trying to figure things out

They probably tried everything they could think of and ended with SSTV or remembered Come To Daddy by Aphex Twin Video and tried something similar

In case anyone was doubting that Adam AKA CargoCult is mainly behind this, someone has noticed that some of the backgrounds from the Dinosaur pictures are taken from his Flickr...
(to be fair, this is quite tame for one of Adam's little games)

Radio amateurs use SSTV for transmitting pictures of their QSL cards (and nice pics of half-naked women) to each other.

I found very interesting page from the internet, check it if you are interested about SSTV: http://www.g0hwc.com/

That's a curious address 123 5th Avenue, especially as it's surrounded on three sides by 4th Avenue.

My hunch as to how they figured it out: they probably looked at the wav file and realised that the shape of the wav pattern was indicative of visual, rather than audio data. I'd never even heard of SSTV before, though, so I'd have epic failed. Nice to know Valve are still geeks though :).
