Rant Vista

I swear everywhere I go "Omg you use Vista?! WOW. That sucks."

It's so damned tiering, just because you're a total nitwit and don't know how to use your computer nor bother keeping it clean, download porn, install bloatware, add those "free" screensavers, fonts, smileys and all that other internet junk you say Vista is bad.. -.- (you = generalization)

Not sure bout the other Vista users here, but I haven't found any problems with Vista, yes, it has a few bad points and XP drivers are still a bit better.. but then again, those drivers have had over 7 years to mature and get tweaked.

Granted, I think that most people who get Vista, get it through laptops/desktops bought from Dell/HP/Sony... Which all come with ridiculous amounts of unnecessary apps that insist on starting at boot and that just idle and do nothing all day, of which people think "Wow.. Vista needs a lot of applications to run..." and think it's Standard for Vista, and thus Vista is slow, and it's why Vista sucks and blah blah blah.

If you take a look at OSX, granted, it is made by Apple, so they have no need to add their own crap to it, they ship it with the OS, and iLife and maybe one or two programs you choose to be pre-installed, and that's it. No annoying programs that boot up every time, no stupid live-updates, it's just the OS. And it's like those who install Vista through boot camp.. Of course it'll run better, it's just Vista by itself. And Vista by itself is fast, even if you have programs and settings on it, as long as you keep your startup services and programs relatively empty.

But nope.. that's totally Microsoft's fault. Granted I'm not a fanboy, but it's getting rather annoying that every time I use my computer and someone walks by and sees I have Vista, they always have to drop a comment about how Vista is shite. Gets so tiering arguing with them.. makes ya wanna sock em sometimes no?

Bah.

In a few years time, right before Windows 7, everyone will love Vista.

 

yep, I completely agree with your point. I was also baffled by the fact that most of the other guys I study with (network management in cegep/college) also say vista is **** even though , in majority, they don't even have it installed on their pc. Yes, Vista has its problems (i have a weird one), but so does XP and any other damn Os so... whatever kids, enjoy riding the anti vista/microsoft bandwaggon

I've only had one real issue with Vista and that was nVidia drivers for my 7900GS were complete trash. They didn't work with RivaTuner and nVidia Control Panel would crash ever time I tried to open it, this issues spanned 3 driver versions and made me take my desktop back to XP. My laptop is going great with Vista, it feels the same speed as my desktop did with Vista, which is just as fast as XP. If you have enough ram to make use of Vista's pre-loading of applications feature you will find it is as fast if not faster then XP. And Vista's networking is so much more convenient, hard to get used to at first after XP makes you do things the hard way, but it is nicer.

 

I've turned off all that pre-load stuff, and cleared the folder of everything, turned off Indexing an backups as well

Drivers have been getting much better lately though

 

i agree completly but over the past 2 months ive noticed a change in attitude, at least in my course no-one yet has had a valid answer against vista, many thought they did but were quickly and easily shot down.

I find the networking to be much more powerful and easier to use, it's different to XP but once you get used to it, it works so much better. I had endless headaches with XP networking, not so with Vista, it's almost enjoyable.

 

Vista is changing its image, as more people ACTUALLY use it, and realize that the OS is not bad at all, and is in fact better than XP.
Also it must be noted that most stuff you read on the internet comes from 1 person. What I mean is usually these no life people go on the internet on many forums and post how XYZ sucks. However, people that is comfortable won't go: "WOOOO XYZ IS AWESOME, I just wanted to tell you guys that it is awesome!" nha... it is rare that it occurs, and if it does, people think it's post from the company or spam.

 

Have been using Vista on two machines since not too long after it's release, and have yet to come into any issues.

But everybody I've talked to about my system (or even just the mention of Vista) seem to have just one response: "why use something that doesn't work?" Even my ex roomie to no end mocked me about it, making sly jokes, and complaining about it. All the while my Dell with vista on it is humming away, turned on for months at a time acting as a file server, media player, DL box, surfing machine, ect, without any issues, yet she's having issues just getting her XP rig connected to my home network, along with crashing, viruses (I don't bother to run anti-vir or the such on either of my vista rigs), and wireless issues.

Just goes to show that it's not the system, but how you use it.

 

non-computer tech-savvy people are weird! they just go with the flow, if a few people say that vista is crap they will believe them! i was at my friends house and he was like what OS do you use when i said vista he started and laughing and said it was crap, even though hes probably never used it other than at a store! The search bar is awesome, dont need to have anything on my desktop! other than a few driver issues vistas all good!

 

Yes, totally agree. I have been using vista since it came out. I would never dream of using Xp instead. It's far better.
Although i have to be honest, when i first installed it on my pc i was sketchy and was dual booting with XP and using XP more often. But vista grew on me quickly. It does tick me off when i hear people make fun of vista vs xp. As far as I see it, if your hardware is too old or low power like those tasty EEEs use Xp simply because its the lighter choice (obviously because of its age). If your computer isn't too weak theres no reason atall to not use Vista.

 

If someone is using Vista and has a issue I listen

If they have not used it I dont waste my time listening to them tell me how crap it is as most of the time the bashers are reciting the same thread they read somewhere online

I do think the bashing is decreasing as more and more people use it and the driver support and hardware compatability improves

If you want to piss them off just tell them its not your fault their PC is so crap and weak that it does not have the horse power to run Vista I find this works very well for me

 

I think everyone here is missing the point. A computer OS shouldn't be designed so that a computer savy person can keep the install clean and tweaked. A computer OS should be designed so any idiot off the street can install and maintain it. In today's world an OS need to be simple and stable. Vista is neither to my grandmother or yours. They just want to plug it in and turn it on. Spyware, trojans, drivers, networking. The average schmo care less about all that. and rightfully so.

Computers are so deeply ingrained in our lives at this point, I would rank OS's up there with power and water in terms of daily importance. I don't care when they are there, because they work. When they don't, it's because of a major problem and causes a major public disturbance. But no one cares how they get to you or how they are "made". And that is where the OS's are still not ready for prime time. They aren't stable, powerful, or simple enough for the masses to use them with out having daily/weekly failures. If you look at it from a "I don't care how or why it works, it just needs to work when I need it to." perspective, then Vista is crap. Sorry but it is. My wife's IT department had to take back all the new laptops and re issue the old XP ones, because people were literally throwing the Vista ones at them. My wife's had a massive dent after she launched it off the balcony in a moment of frustration. They couldn't get any work done. Who's fault is that? the 2000 people who don't have CS degrees? Or an OS that 2000 people can't use on a daily basis, most of whom have 4 year uni degrees and beyond? THESE are average people that run businesses all over the world. THIS is who an OS should be designed for. NOT nerds. Sorry, Vista isn't ready for release in 2008. Imagine if they released cars, buses, airplanes or medical equipment with the same quality standards of performance and stability as the OS's coming out now.

What problems did Vista give them on their laptops ?

I went from windows 98 to Vista I really have not had a single problem my 2 older kids 12 and 15 love it and have not managed to stuff it up so far so for me it really has been trouble free

Both guys I work with have it on their laptops and they love it and have not had any problems what or why was it so bad for your wifes company

I do agree with you people just want it to work but that has been my experience with Vista so far

Ive just bought vista ultimate retail (need to wate for it to arrive ) but i feel its about time to move to vista. and my pc dose need a spring clean.

 

A few months ago I was in the same OMG VISTA BLOWS (but I haven't used it) boat. More recently I had some time to actually read about it and not just the biased reviews and the like and I no longer think it sucks. I still don't think I'll use it though for one big reason: XP is a nice OS now. After being around for so long as many people have mentioned, it has mature drivers and support for most things I'd want to do with it. For the things it can't do like handle a 64bit processor or do development work, I have linux and mac os running on my mac. The only time I can see myself buying vista is if there's a game that absolutely won't run on xp (don't care about dx10 as long as it runs) or some hardware that has no drivers except for vista ones.

 

The only quirk I had with Vista is in it's networking stack. Sometimes it fails to save the static IP I set... Well, actually not the IP, the defaut gateway.

 

I'm an early adopter for some things, but not others. Decided to wait until Vista matured a little bit (both OS patches and drivers) until installing, especially since I was having no problems with my XP installs. My boyfriend did have problems in a game we play together, but chalk that up to the X-FI problems and 8800 series nvidia drivers. Needless to say, I didn't want to recreate that situation with my setup at the time.

I will be installing Vista very soon, especially since I got the full Vista Ultimate through the MS Consumer Feedback Panel participation and one I'll be getting from The Mod Shop competition for Way of the Warrior. Just ordered some goodies from NewEgg to set up an htpc to run the 32" lcd. Added an oem copy of Vista Home Premium for that. Also, laptop I ordered from Dell earlier in the month comes with Vista Ultimate installed (darn the week delay notice I just got!). Looks as though the shift over is happening here.

 

been using vista since it came with my dell built pc, after eradicating the rubbish it came packed with, its easy to use, fast, and looks nice, i wouldn't ever go back to xp, unless, say UT2004 or CnC didn't work
Edit: the few problems i've had were simply solved by giving the program full admin rights, i see no reason not to use it now, the constant UAc prompts you get used to, but then again i guess im biased

 

I'm still an xp user and currently have no intention of upgrading, i don't really see the need since i only really use xp as a platform for launching games from and my gfx card isn't powerful enough to run DX10 well. Although i'm probably not the market MS are look towards, i only upgraded from 2k in late '06 after it transpired that i couldn't get an SLI driver for poor old 2k. I still run in "classic" mode and tbh beyond SLI support and continued security support from MS i still see no advantage over 2k.

 

I agree completely. I've used Vista Ultimate since February 2007, and I've only had two problems. The first was a dodgy D-Link driver that made my computer blue-screen when I tried internet connection sharing, and the second is that my computer refuses to go into/resume from sleeping properly, but I think that's because I messed around with some ACPI settings in the BIOS. In terms of day-to-day use, Vista is brilliant, and it hasn't slowed down with age in the same way that XP does. My computer still boots in under 30 seconds.

Be thankful for the crapware Dell installs if you know how to get rid of it though. It makes the computer far cheaper.
