    1.6 52plate MkIV Golf

Not the most popular Golf - but nonetheless it's a comfortable ride. Apologies for the crappy phone picture.

Hopefully, this will be more reliable than my old 55 Citroen C4 - which needed about £1500 worth of parts when I sold it...

Very nice Desert - I've not read any reviews of it yet. Should be a better drive than the last one at least!

    do go on... :D

ive been interested in trains ever since i was young (but admittedly i dont know much about them). as luck would have it, our house is located right next to a line that takes freight in and out of a relatively large shipping yard. we are just a few miles up-track from a switching yard so the trains are traveling at low speeds as they pass (say 20-30 mph) so we get a good look as they go by. i love the sound of those beasts!

i dont understand why living near tracks has such a bad rep

It's Canadian Pacific Railway's track evaluation train (TEC64). It's on the go 10 months out of 12 and it tests the tracks to see if they are safe and whatnot. It uses a set of gyroscope, lasers and high speed cameras and checks for very small details (alignement, surface, gauge, rate of change, etc) as small as 1/16th of an inch I believe. We get all the data on a continous brush chart and we can test at up to 50mph. We also have a system that analyzes the joint bars of the tracks as we go. It can take a picture of a joint bar at 50mph and an algorithm somehow manages to find cracks, we just have to go through all the photos using a Logitech gamepad to determine whether or not the defect is actually there.

All of this is done in the last car (the one on the left on the photo). The second car is our sleeper car where we have a whole kitchen, a dining area with a 40" tv and a ps3 and our sleeping area with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The other car is our storage area and of course we have a locomotive.

So far on this job (in 2 months) I have been in Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Regina, Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatoon (this week end) and even more to come. I was also in the canadian rockies for a few weeks, constantly surrounded by gorgeous mountains everywhere. I also got to see the Rocky Mountaineer
It was on the other side of the river and it was beautiful. I quickly realized how lucky I was when I checked the price of a ride from Calgary to Vancouver... Especially considering I get paid for taking the same route :D

Anyways, this is what I "drive" these days. As for real cars, I get to drive rentals every week and last week end I got to drive a 2012 Nissan Maxima and I loved it. It looks super mean and the 290hp makes it feel pretty mean too. I only wish it was manual ... :(

Your job sounds AWESOME. So far today I've spent the best part of 11 hours on my knees, elbow deep in a network cabinet...

Don't get me wrong though, I love my job as well. There are probably not many people who enjoy the sort of work that I do, but I really do get a lot of job satisfaction on a daily basis :thumb:

    Cheap, ultra-reliable and almost rust-proof.

Sir, it may not be cool, or fast, or safe, but you now have.... a car.

    Good for you mate :thumb:

It's not all fun though. We work crazy (and irregular) hours (always at least 12 a day, minimum) and since it's an internship (in my case) and not a regular job, I don't get to go home at all. This means I live on a train and in hotels non stop for 4 months. I also work with another student who's in the same situation as me so we see each other all day long, every day. I don't know about him but I constantly have to fight the urge to punch his face in ;)

Add me on facebook if you want to see the photos I took on my trip so far :p

    okay back on topic

I still drive (when I'm home anyway) my good ol' 2001 Accord. I still love this car so much I just can't wait to get back home :)

I'm in the small, French and a little bit fast phase at the moment (I'm 19). Upgraded from a Peugeot 106 1.1 to this, a Citroen C2 GT. Such an unbelievable difference between them, the C2 feels so much more modern and planted when driving.

    Congrats, as a 106 Rallye'er I approve of the choice. :D

If you want any tuning advice for the engine drop me a line, it's a doddle.
