As a newb I've only been left + rep once so far but I have loads of rep icons on my posts and I noticed it's the same for many others, I guess it's a forum bug?
Basically you've been rep'd by one of the rep giants. Teez is my guess. Once you have more rep you give more rep, and because some of our members have been mega awesome, if they rep you you shoot up the rankings. The mods have been tweaking the system recently to try and level the playing field. Also a "rep cheat" is where people rep each other in circles, sort of like daisy chaining in Public schools. (Which despite my title I am not one of)
What's probably happened is you've been given random rep while they was given rep to someone else tbh I wouldn't let it go to your head rep is like the American military and their medals completely meaningless lol
I think the rep system should be scrapped in favour of a Thanks system, which is similar but arguably more meaningful. The green e-peen is, as Teel says, totally meaningless; many people get greened up in the demote thread which is hardly representative of the greater forum content.
I earned most my rep in the hardware section years ago, and most recently in general regarding motoring headaches. No demote thread for me, I find it boring as hell. currently ~408K of useful advice

One of our young classroom assistants was talking about where she's going on holiday and had a slight blonde moment. Our caretaker jokingly tore her to shreds and hilarity ensued. +1. I think a Thanks option would be nice indeed. Would also stop people ++reping random BS or circlerepping because your name's underneath the post. There's got to exist a vBulletin 3 addon or mod or whatever to do that. Not that it matters that much. The forums are fine even without any reputation or thanks system.
