I have a decision to make, reasonably quickly, on a monitor for a build I am doing for a friend and I would like the benefit of your collective wisdom. I have been doing a lot of research at the budget set for me by my friend, despite me trying to up the monitor budget to get something decent. However, given the limited time he will spend in front of the screen, he has been adamant about the budget ceiling. The only concession I squeezed out of the tightarse was that I talked him into going for 1920x1080 rather than a smaller resolution, even though this potentially limits the choices at his budget point. The GPU is an ATI 5770 and his usage will be mainly media, web, office with maybe some minimal gaming (not FPS). I would personally say the Samsung or BenQ. However if at all possible try and see these screens in a working display enviornment. Personally I tweak the crap out of my displays for optimial viewing. The 'look! Ours looks awesome!' sales technique usually looks like rubbish in your house (brightness and contrast blown way out usally). I end up turning off the 'OMG!!!111' settings cause they tend to skew real world settings. I just built a tri display setup and went with Viewsonic monitors. One is vertical and the viewing angles are definatly not setup for vertical. So if your going to setup a vertical, look into that performance side of the display. Happy hunting!
I would go with the Samsung first and then the dell second, just spend a little time to get your settings the way you prefer them.

Asus makes some sweet monitors now as well. They also have the ASUS VW224U Black 22" 2ms(GTG) Widescreen LCD Monitor w/ HDCP Support 300 cd/m2 1000:1 (ASCR 5000:1) Built in Speakers for $149.99 after rebate as well which is 95.06 GBP
Hmmm, I was really looking for a new one to ensure he had the full warranty cover but thanks anyway. If it was me buying I wouldn't really mind but it is his money. Thanks for the input but...the VW246H is on or over the £200 mark here in the UK, way over the £130 budget. The VE248H doesn't seem to be common here, those that stock it have it at around the same £200 mark. I can't find the VW224U on sale here and it is only 1680x1050. Anyone else have any suggestions?
I've had a BenQ G2220HD for about 24 hours, and its absolutely awesome!!! Nice and bright, looks huge compared to my acer 18.5inch. Amazing. They are going for £98 incl VAT at CCL, where you can get free shipping too. Resolution is 1920 x 1080
Cheers, I have been looking at the version with the LED backlight, the G2222HDL. This model only draws 24w whereas the model you had draws 42w, for around a tenner more. Other than that they are the same iirc. I was looking at sourcing a G2222HDL from CCL but they went out of stock and are now overdue. I even posted in their forum section here. I have not seen the Dell before, does anyone have any experience with that model?
