Just been investigating a new GPU, don't mind spending a little money to make it a little more "futureproof" however I have noticed the RTX2070 Super is currently out of stock at a lot of vendors including the Founders Edition directly from NVidia. ( I would prefer the Founders Edition where possible) At this time, is it probably worth waiting a few more months for Ampere and the new series of cards to be announced? Resolutions i will be running 2x 1920x1080 and 1x 2560x1440 monitors. (1440p monitor only when gaming)
I recently sold my 1080ti FE for more than I paid out 18 months ago, grabbed a bargain basement 1070 mini and have a little nest egg to take the sting out of the price of the next gen cards, when they arrive - there's nothing out right now that I absolutely need a better card for and the 1080ti will start seeing game optimisation support dropping off pretty soon. TBF the 1070 managed Metro Exodus just fine @ 1440p, although most of my current gaming is split between WOWS and FTL; neither of which actually need a discreet GPU. I am about to run throught Dishonored again though.
Both AMD and Nvidia are set to launch the next generation of cards this year, there has been nothing new for a while and no real competition, so if you are not in desperate need I would see what drops later, whilst you are unlikely to make any savings with the new cards, you are likely to get more for you money.
For 1440p gaming, "last gen" 1000 series will do nicely. I wouldn't really say 970 I had was struggling, it managed perfectly fine on high setting (which is medium judging by number of settings) with Doom Eternal. I'd still have the 970 if I were still playing flat screen games. (VR needed more VRAM) I wouldn't buy brand new, latest and greatest right now. 2070 Super is £500 now, could be worth £300 or less when new RTX 3070 launches. You can get a 1070 for around £200 on ebay, last one sold for £160 on here. It should tide you over to after price war dust settles, probably early 2021 if both red and green relases their first round of cards end of this year. I did exactly that, bought a 1070 Ti for £210 to play Asgard's Wrath.
I think the decision may be I go 2060 now then upgrade to a new card come the release of the new cards and relegate the 2060 to my 2and pc.
I'd hope so, as someone who don't own a 2000 series The reason last few generations hasn't dropped much is because of decreasing £:$ ratio over the same period of time. Explained here: So newer, faster cards becomes more expensive. Lead to older cards don't get devalued as much. It's currently 1.25 GBP to USD. If 3070 launches with $499 RRP, but with 2080 Super performance (25% increase over 2070), that would push 2070 to same level current 1070 is at (2070 is 25% faster than 1070). Currently 1070 are selling for ~£200 on ebay, cheaper here.
I'm surprised that a preowned GTX1080 hasn't dropped in price at all in almost a year. Last Sept. I bought one for around £300, and now, ten months later, they are still selling for virtually the same. I think it's because there was a significant jump in performance (and price) with the 10-series, and although the RTX cards are faster, I don't think people care enough about ray tracing to pay the RTX premium (they are ludicrously expensive). I always dip in and out of the high-end GPU market because most of the time I don't play the latest games so if I do get a high-end card I tend not to keep it for too long. Maybe I'll get lucky like David, and make a profit when I next sell something!
