Bet that's not cheap on your insurance! Ouch.

Look nice though, what did you use to repair curb damage? I'm in the middle of refurbing some TD 1.2's which have quite a few minor chips etc out of the rim. I've got a tube of plastic padding's chemical metal ready to go, which was recommended, but it'd be interesting to hear other thoughts. :)

I have a quote (valid for 30 days) on a 2001 Golf GTi 1.8T for £1650 fully comp. It's a lot of money but I don't mind paying it as im currently paying £910 fully comp for my 1.0 Polo with all mods declared. Its a heavy car with 150bhp but im going to leave it standard for a year before doing anything as its a pretty big upgrade from 50bhp.

Thats actually the same stuff I used :D It worked well and was easy to sand. My dad also used it to fix a leaking radiator on his car and its held strong for 5 months so far.

£1650 is seriously cheap, you must have a happy post code. :)

I was still paying that much for a standard Punto at your age.

150+hp should be plenty in 1300kg, just be careful with it, don't want to end up in a hedge or wrapped round a lamp-post!

Glad to hear the ubiquitous CM works well, I'm hoping it'll be hard enough to stand the tyre fitter being a bit heavy-handed.

I bought a 2002 gti 1.8t 3 weeks ago, loving the car so far, a straight normal remap take them to 192bhp, had a quote for £180 locally, im not going to bother as of yet tho as i want a FMIC, BOV and some other engine mods and then have a custom remap done, my mates done something similair with his and he's pushing out just over 240bhp, its a rapid car.

Whats it like to live with and how is it on fuel? I know its not going to be anywhere as good as my 1litre Polo but I don't do enough driving for it to bother me. I've done quite a bit of research on uk-mkivs and it seems like the car for me. A bora sport, leon cupra or audi a3 would be alternatives but I prefer the look of the Golf.

For the first year I would probably leave mine fairly standard performance wise and just add a few poly bushes and grab a set of coilovers. In the long run I would be looking at similar modifications as you have planned, Forge stuff looks great and seems to be very popular among the mk4 crowd.

UK-MKIVS is a great site, i have learnt alot from there.

on weekdays i tend to drive to speed limits and dont go over 60 on motorways/duals on the way to work, i tend to get between 40-45mpg

on the weekends i usually average 26-35 as i like to boot it :p

Thats going by the trip computer, im not sure how acurate they are. I used to have a volvo 1.8 sport and the golf is better on fuel than that was.

I'm getting some 18" BBS RS replicas sometime this month and then some FK Highsport Coilovers next month if all goes to plan.

I really wanted a LCR but they are hard to find at a decent price with low mileage, my golf is an 02 plate with 58,600 on the clock, great condition, paid £2100, just make sure you shop around for a few months until you find the right one.

That MPG is actually as good as my Polo! If anything it may even be better as whenever I have to take 3/4 passengers, or drive up a hill then I use a lot of fuel, quickly and im used to comuting at 60 anyway.

58k at that price was a really good find, there are so many above 100k which really puts me off, even with full service histories.

they are rare under 60k, 100k is okay aslong as they got proof that it has had regular oil changes with decent oil and that it hasnt been screwed, when you go looking at them, check the trip computer for the average speeds and average fuel consumption, aslong as it hasnt been reset you can tell how the car has been driven, and i would always buy standard, if its been messed about with then most of the time its been boy racer'd. then you will also have the joy of doing everything to the car yourself

EDIT: i took my car to get window tints last week and they guy who done it had a golf gt-tdi on 210,000miles, i was shocked, it still drove like new.

I didn't realise the trip comp stored average speeds and consumption, that's good to know. Yea I completely agree, I want a nice clean example that hasn't been touched as I love tinkering and doing as much as im capable of doing myself.

They are certainly build to last! My sister is lined up to inherit the Polo as soon as she has passed so it shouldn't be too long before I can pick up a Golf. Ideally I want a 3 door in grey but if not, I will settle for black or silver.

look after a VW engine and it will last decades. i just averaged 42.2 over 17miles on the way home from work, 80% motorways/duals.

    Got to be a 3dr, i don't think the 5dr looks right.

I used to have a A3 1.8T, Revo Technik are good for remaps. But get a few mods first and go stage 2

Aif filter, i had this which was top for money and the chatter when coming off boost was pretty loud. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cold-Air-...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item45fd7c2819

DO NOT BUY A BOV.. will mess things up and car wont liek it. DO replace the plastic bosch re circ valve with a metal one such as a 007P from forge.

    Get a exhaust system

and fit a 4bar fuel pressure regulator (dont buy a adjustable one there pants)

Then get stage 2 map done and your be pushing some decent power

Oh and mileage wise i got mine on 120k sold it on 130k and the guy was still driving it round my area 2 years later.

Buying a car that's 10 years old a service history means very little tbh. They could be serviced at the bare minimum cost with the cheapest oil etc by the most incompetent mechanic in the place, then stamped, or they could've been treated to a hugely complex service schedule by a very experienced specialist.

Buy on the condition, number one rule. Buy on how many parts are listed as recently changed (with receipts), and think about what might conceivably need changing soon. What also helps is to get a feel for how much the seller likes the car and how long they've had it - someone who buys it as a snotter for a couple of months and does nothing with it isn't worth listening to. An enthusiast who's owned it for 5-6 years and kept it pampered is a different story.

Im also looking at the A3 1.8t quattro 180bhp, a bit more power as standard, 4wd and somehow its a few hundred pounds cheaper to insure than a 150bhp front wheel drive golf! :S Although the Audi doesn't look as nice, in my opinion.

Also looked at 180bhp Leon Cupras but insurance is about a grand more than the Golf or A3! The front of the Leon looks good but the rest looks awful, personally.

Change of plan. Instead of a 1.8t A3 or mk4 Golf, I bought a mk2 Golf GTi to tidy up and eventually covert to a 1.8t :)

It was a bit of a state when I bought it a few months ago:

Most of the stuff i've done so far:

    Full service
    new clutch
painted the gearbox and rocker cover with VHT paint
new discs, pads, fluid and some hard lines
    full gear linkage kit
momo team 280 steering wheel (so nice to use, even without PAS)
    aftermarket rear lights
removed 4ft tall wing mounted aerial
    de wipered the rear
removed swage line decal and red pin stripe (all faded and damaged).

I know i've taken away a few original features but its my car and I will be keeping it for a long time. Im keeping all original parts anyway so its easy to return to standard.

I've also just picked up a g60 subframe and wishbones as mine are very corroded. Im going to get them powder coated gloss black before fitting, they also came with poly bushes and a 25mm Neuspeed ARB which is a bonus.

I love how it has it's arse stuck up in the air, like some filthy lady. I assume you'll be calming her down in that department?
