I thought SMB was important to the OS or am I thinking of the atom bomb exploit (which was fixed IIRC)?

SMBv1. Current version is SMBv3. Even Vista has SMBv2.

or, if you prefer command line copypasta...

    Code:
    Dism /online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:SMB1Protocol

    Regedit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\

Make a new KEY called Windows Search
Make a new DWORD called AllowCortana
Set the DWORD value to 0

    Restart PC

People will eventually have to get used to the idea that Microsoft can't be expected to maintain backwards compatibility for every piece of outdated 3rd party application for eternity.
