    Smart mod.
    I did the same but..
I turned "data flow" on this port and now it is input for audio signal. From this time phones amplifier included in CD-Rom boost signal from my sound card and I no longer need Windows audio mixer to set volume.
    Regards.

All of these questions should really go in the updated thread:

I think, I know what You did. I was talking about the audio out on CD Drive. We used this different ways.
    That's all.
    Regards.

Forgive me if I've overlooked this somewhere in my search, but... I'd like to run something that takes a bit more juice than an led to indicate hdd/dvd activity. Is there a guide somewhere for boosting the signal voltage to run other electronic gear? What I need is to run 4 different 5 volt devices, 2 to indicate hdd activity, 2 for dvd activity (4 drives total).
    Thanks!
    Mooooooooo

Those switches switch in a cross pattern. Second of all: what zapwizard did was solder leads to where the switch is soldered on the PCB, then electrically isolated the audio plug and soldered the switch wires to that. That's the short version at least. Try soldering two wires to the contact points and touching them together while the drive is powered to get the idea.

but do i have to isolate the audio connectors? or can i just hook up the switches connection to one of the audio traces and then just run the audio cable into there and solder wires to the switch?

No, the audio traces are (obviously) connected to circuitry elsewhere on the PCB that is designed to handle audio. I don't think it'll do you any good and will probably create a (non-permanent) cock-up. Just isolate the so it'll work properly or skip the audio connector step completely ;)

ok so basically do the whole guide but dont hook up the led, just solder a wire from the switch to the audio connector thing (after cutting everything) then just solder wires to one side of the switch and the other led parallel to that (accross or whatever) and then stick it in the right audio connector holes?

I don't recommend using the audio connector hack unless you know what you are doing in the first place.

Check out my new guide, which is also more detailed, and has been linked several times:
