Visually spectacular, straightforward plot is a bit lacking but still worth seeing ( if only for Olivia Wilde in spandex )..
Warehouse 13 currently has 2 sister shows, Alphas and Eureka. I'm about to start watching Eureka pretty soon, hopefully it's as good as Warehouse 13
Well, I'm not sure it would even qualify as sci-fi in the normal sense. It is, rather famously, a genre buster
It is excellent and a must for the first six or so seasons -- for me it became pants around the time they tied up most of the alien conspiracy stuff (mytharc episodes, in X-files speak) and really declined once Mulder departed. I also thought the second movie was rubbish -- even Billy Connelly couldn't save it.
Much good stuff in these three pages, and I feel I need to add a couple that's not been mentioned thus far. Supernova Screamers (the first one, not the second one) And then there's the movie that I can't, for the life of me, remember the title of. It's about a war between mankind and an alien species. Two combat pilots of either side crashes on a planet somewhere and has to work together in order to survive. I'm sure someone on here knows which movie I'm referencing. It's really good, but somewhat slow.
Just joshing with you mate, don't take me too seriously <3 To be fair I didn't like Apocalypse Now the first time I saw it. I thought it was slow and tedious. But I watched it again last year and loved it so much I watched it again the next day. I don't know what happened, maybe I was just looking at it from a different perspective. I wouldn't say Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was a slow film though... The new Tron is mediocre at best. Visually very stylistic but as a movie I have to confess I was disappointed... it was pretty unmemorable.
As I said: Cowboy Bebop Roujin Z the Ghost in the Shell films and series. And LotR is NOT Science Fiction. It's Fantasy. See where The Matrix got it all from. Just The Seven Samurai or The Magnificent Seven in space. The original script (which was quite different) was even sadder. You'd have cried. Promise. TRON was a celebration of the world of computing, more than Sci Fi. Best seen in 8 bit.
That would be "Enemy Mine". Also, "Battle Beyond the Stars" = "The Magnificent Seven" = "Seven Samurai". (Robert Vaughn plays pretty much the same character in both BBtS & TM7)
Rather than quote the usual suspects seen in this thread, and even though OP has a dislike of subtitles, I'd recommend the Japanese movie trilogy of "Twentieth Century Boys". I thought it was truly amazing.
Moon and source code are both good films imo, moon being the better of the two. Have you seen the original "The Thing"? Great sci-fi horror stuff. Enjoyed reading this thread there's definately a few things I'll try out myelf
Rendezvous With Rama (Arthur C Clarke) My all time favourite sci fi book. You said you'd prefer films/TV - however you also said you have time on your hands so give a book a go! Kept me far more entertained and excited than any film (AND I'm a typical lazy student!). Also if you like Rendezvous there's a big fat trilogy that comes after it. It goes into tons of detail and ends up answering many of the questions that crop up throughout. There *was* also a film version in planning being pushed by Morgan Freeman of all people.. Dunno what became of it. PS Don't let 2001 dissuade you from Arthur C Clarke because the film and book are entirely separate entities, as said by Stanley Kubrick and Clarke themselves. 2001 film = philosophical; the 3 stages of human evolution. 2001 the book = pure sci fi.
My respect for you just went up considerably good sir. lol Especially Blade Runner and the Anime selection. Most people have never seen Roujin Z sadly.
A favorite of mine too. I even had the Adventure game on my Amiga back in the day. Thanks for the memories mate! As mentioned above, Blakes 7, Logan's run, BLADE RUNNER, Enemy Mine, Dark Star, Last Starfighter are a must. Just some trivia on the later, The Last Starfighter was the first film to use CG for all the special effects except makeup and explosions. All done on a Cray X-MP. On a side note, reading through this thread, I just realized that I've seen just about everything mentioned here with the exception of maybe 3-4 films. I'm either a complete scifi freak or.... I'm getting REALLY old! Off to find those flicks that have eluded me!
Actually, Last Starfighter was just about the first film to use CG for anything besides computer displays.
I seem to have a habit of choosing series that get canned early, but anyway here's some of my suggestions not all strictly sci fi The Prisoner (1967) - Absolutely must see TV Dark Skies Jericho - Not scifi as such, but give it a go The 4400 - Gets better and better each episode Flashforward - Was really getting interesting before it got canned Threshold - As above Caprica - As above Taken - ust got 1 season Journeyman - Very much like Quantum Leap Farscape Stargate SG1 Stargate Atlantis
Not really, Tron used CG 2 years earlier although it only amounted to roughly 20minutes or so of the entire film. Light cycles, tanks and some digital backgrounds. -- edit -- Sorry for hijacking the thread.
