Seeing how often this topic has come up lately, I thought I would spend a few minutes making this handy-dandy flow chart which will hopefully summarise the various informative posts by mvagusta et al. and streamline the process for future bit-tech dating endeavours...

In all seriousness though, even if she does have a boyfriend it's not a crime to go for coffee. Actually, go for coffee and cheesecake. And if she says no, you'll still get the cheesecake And if you are persistent, you can bring her some cheesecake, on your late shift or something.

Worst case;
"Sorry... I really can't - I promised my BF he could do me up the rear tonight"
Best case:
"Sure sounds like fun. Want a BJ with that?"

Chances are it'll fall into the middle somewhere. Probably somewhere closer to the best case than the worst case.
If she says no, you go "Ahwell... i'll just grab some for myself then." and walk it off.

She doesn't have a BF, but is really not into you? You're outta luck.
She's into you? Lucky you.

more serious; i know/have known/have been one myself a lot of girls (and boys) who just stay in a relation, for the relations sake, for the sex, for not being alone, but are very interested in someone else 'walking by'.

but maybe you are all moral saints who would never 'steal' a girl from a guy you dont know.
