I am interested in building a USB hub for my computer that will hopefully add about 4 USB connections to my computer. I want to build it in an altoids tin, and plan on wiring it myself, but I don't know how to make it safe. Do I just wire it Pin-for-pin to each connector? Do I need something to distribute the voltage evenly to each USB connector? Does it need it's own power supply? If you have any experience building one of these, or can direct me to someone who can, help would be much appreciated.

You need a chip specifically designed to act as a USB hub. You can't simply wire the data lines together. That'd be bad.
