I've been trying to find out about how to power up my PC using a key switch...

I'm fairly new to modding, learning all the time, and need some advice from anyone who's already done this mod??

I know I can buy them from Maplins among others, but just want advice on how it works / how to wire one up??

    Welcome to the boards.

You would ideally want one that is momentary. Then you just need to cut the lead off the one in the case, and connect it to your new switch. When the two wires are shorted together, your peecee will start.

Thanks for the welcome, and the advice.

My idea was basically have a "child-proof" power switch.... cos I had a bad experience with a few mb's of files deleted from my PC recently:sigh:

I don't want prying hands to be able to switch my PC on when I'm not there, and don't want to disconnect the wiring when I go out either?!

Ah, maybe that calls for a different answer.

You can take any old key swtich (not a momentary, but the ones you get from auto parts stores etc.) and put it inline with the power button for a 'arm' control. With the keyswitch off, the power button does nothing (including while the peecee is running--they can't turn it off) but with it on, the power button is 'armed.'

    Now, that sounds pretty good!!

I didn't particularly want to replace the original power button, but this way I could even re-route the wires to the back of the case, and "hide" the key switch?!

    Thanks linear

I'm a paranoid freak, and dont particularly wantmy parents to be able to look at whats on my PC. Although if they ask me, then I will gladly show them around. Its just that when I do finally build this thing and pour so much time and money into it, I really dont want anyone else to be able to use it. So a key switch to "arm" my PC would own!:geek:

Yes, you could definatly do that. Just find the wire that does to your power button and add in the keyswitch.

I had planned on doing this just a little differently. Can't reveal anything at the moment but it will be soon...

These are the momentary switches i was going to use:

at a local lan a few months ago, a friend of mine leeched a guys pron.

he found something like kiddie pron

he grabed an admin and showed him

    the guy was arrested.

however he escaped legal action cause the girls were of "questionable age" in otherwords, there was no way to determine definite age. so he was let off with a warning and a "if theres a next time, we will persue this further"

(he was only 19 so even if they were a shade under 18 its not realy perverted, and he realy did seem shocked that the cops were arresting him over it )

This thread starts out as a query about PC security, and ends up with a caution about kiddie pr0n ?? :sigh: :wallbash:

Yes, you gotta be careful about what you store on your PC, and what sites you visit, but I've got an adequate firewall installed so that my kids can use my PC, and questionable material is no longer an issue.
My main interest is actually forums, FPS games, and PC modding.
