I got a letter from UCAS today, basicaly asking where i realy want to go and i honestaly dont know, as all i have to go on are the web sites. i just chose the schools out of the tables almost at random.

i got a unconditional offer from
    York
    Liverpool
    Shefeild

the other 3 i got rejected from(Bath,Newc,Soton). I liveing in america at the moment so i cant realy go and visit the schools witch blows. I was wondering if any one had any exsperance or had heard anything good or bad about any of these schools. any help would be very helpfull. i would be doing Mphys at all 3.

    thanks

From what I unserstnad all 3 arent bad unis.(sure people who are at the unis will beable to give more info)
York is the quietest of the 3 cities, would say its the "niceest" of the 3 to live at, older style and more laid back/
Sheffield is a a rough and ready city as is liverpool in many respects more to do, better for students/young people IMO. Smae with liverpool tbh.
As i said people from those unis can give a better idea but it really depends what you want from uni life....

I'd say that York is the nicest place out of those, and dare I say it the best university. The nightlife isn't amazing (just 4 nightclubs, but a lot of pubs) but the people I know there seem to have a lot of fun, the people are super-friendly too (compared to dahn sahth ;)) Liverpool is a pretty rough place in general, Sheffield is nicer, but as far as academic standards go I'd say that York probably wins.

Yer i'd say york, its a great city. The other 2 are pretty rough from what i've seen of them. I dont think theres allot between the uni's either? Not sure on that tho..

Agreed. York is a real nice city, but the uni is less renowned that liverpool. Liverpool is the "city of culture", although the scallies/pikey kids are ones to watch out for like in manchester, you gotta know the streets.

What course you doing? Better be something worth while for the money youll be paying as a foreign student!

Don't forget, he'd probably be paying that in the states anyway. At least, that's how I understand it.

am currently in my 2nd year at york, and it is a very good uni, i like it.
however, the night life is a tad dire. yes it has 4 clubs, but they kinda suck.

    heres a run down:

    the gallery
went there last night, thursdays are student nights, they play cheese upstairs and mowtown down. the drinks offers seem to have stopped, so expect to pay £2.70 a pint and £3.20 a bottle.
wednesday is indie night downstairs, prob the best indie event york city has to offer.
its been recently "done up", so looks alright. expect townies/scallies etc. most nights, but esp fridays and saturdays

    toffs
pile of arrrrs tbh, tuesday student night, quite cheap, indie room and cheese room. not been yet this term, so cant tell you if its improved, but it aint great.

    ziggys
a favourite of my greek postgrad stats lecturer, he loves it. dirty, and a bit of a sweat bath. best for alt. nights, wednesday student nights, but always filled with jocks, as wednesday is sport day. expect large rugby people dressed as ****s or in suits and the football and hockey lots competing to see who can be the biggest group of idiots, in my eyes they both win.

    ikon & diva
dont frequent either often, as dance music and cheese arent my thing. some of my mates go every monday (student night) religiously in fact, cant see the attraction myself. however free bus from uni to ikon & diva, so not all bad.

ooh, almost forgot, campus events run by the "socs" are usually very good.

york is a really pretty city, filled with tourists and OAPs, however, the campus itself, fails to have a central venue, or student union bar, so no gigs on campus from cool bands. there are plenty of bars, almost one per college, so thats pretty cool. plus leeds is only 30mins away on the trains, so if you really want good night life and/or gigs, then thats the place to visit.

physics is good here, my housemate and friend are doing computer simulation and physics, and astro physics repsectively. they both say the course is very good, and we have a pretty physics building (not as pretty as the biology one tho)

i seem to have focused upon the night life more than the actual academia of the uni, looks like my priorities are a little twisted.

anyways, any other questions about york, id be happy to answer.

three reasons not to come here to York (and these are the only three i can think of) -
    • Geese and Ducks- these lovely charming cretins have spend most of their time soiling all the pavements round here and generally being aggressive. Recently however the fun has gone up a notch, horny ducks flying round gang raping each other outside the kitchen window while ur tryin to eat tea, and insecure parents going psycho at anything that moves in the vague direction of their precious fur balls.
    • Thursday Ikon - what can i say the legend has come to an end :( heres what used to happen - free bus picks u up from on campus, u pay £8 to get in (£4 when they ran the 2 for 1 offer!), and it was drink all u wanted for free! and as if that wasnt enough a free bus home!
alas however the legend has ended and thursday ikon now does suck (£10 in - 10 free drinks :miffed: )
    • Goodricke College C & D accomodation blocks - best description is probably an unfinished prison. the corridors are just wide enough to walk down, with breeze block walls which can't be plastered otherwise they wouldnt meet eu regulation for something or other.
oh and there is a fourth John Dawson however as u will be doing physics there's no chance of u having the pleasure of his analogue circuits lecturing.
joking aside york uni is a really good university with the added bonus aldi is close by and aldi are selling figerprint scanners for 20 bob at the moment!

    University Of Ulster, Jordanstown Campus.

Not a bad uni but the night life sucks, the union itself is tiny. The pub quiz isn't bad though. For any nothern irish out there, I usually end up in Thompsons, Katy Dalys or the Limelight :)

You should have seen what happened this morning in our quad; a big crow was hopping around amongst the families of geese, getting hissed at by most of them until it notices a couple of less vigilant geese. All of a sudden it darts in, grabs one of the little goslings without the parents even noticing and flies off with the thing. It made my morning I can tell you.

I qual as a home student, thats the main reason im going to school in england. i spent year 8 and 9 in the south, we own a flat in north wales and add citizenship to get a hooray for socialism.
american high school is a joke there are no required standardized tests, just classes. Tho if you wana go to college you have to take the SAT's and mabey a few AP exams. AP exams are specilized for a certian subject where the sat's just test for basic maths and vocabulary. so basicaly they didn't have anything to put a condional offer on, as i had already taken all the ap's i wanted to(comp sci, phys, euro, enviro)

    how the broadband at york?

I can't be sure, but most UK universities are connected to the JANET backbone with incredibly fast connections.

The only problem is in online gaming, they report an artificially high ping, so a lot of folks drop you as soon as they see it, despite the fact that it is probably one of THE fastest connections to the net.

As I said though, I don't know whether York is on Janet or not. If it is, then you'll have no problems at all.

Nah they're not a myth ;), I got one from Aberystwyth  but I did do a scholarship exam to get it.

When I was choosing which uni to go to, I had a look at Liverpool, and I quite liked the city. A few dodgy areas, but no worse than parts of Wolverhampton where I live, good nightlife, lots of places to go (the benefit of going to uni in a big city I guess). I did apply for a course at 'pool but it was way down on where I wanted to go because despite the city, the course didn't interest me as much as ones offered by other unis.

I also applied through UCAS to Sheffield, but they rejected me because the subjects I study now were totally different from what I wanted to do at uni, so I dare say they didn't think I'd have enough knowledge or experience to do well on the course. I have family in Sheffield so I visit perhaps a couple of times a year, quite a nice place, again quite good nightlife, but overall I think I prefer Liverpool as a city.

I haven't been to York for years but its okay, a much more old fashioned city if I remember, more touristy than Sheffield and Liverpool (if you ignore the Beatles museum in Liverpool). Night life I don't think would be as good as the other two, but Leeds is close and Leeds is supposed to be amongst the best places for a night out in the UK.

I never got artificially high pings with the JANET 10mbit at Bristol, maybe it's something that Oxford do to discourage you guys ;) (OT - What college are you at? My mum works at Oriel ;))

From what my friends at York tell me, it depends what hall you end up in as to whether you get network in rooms, but they're putting it in more and more now.

It depends on the halls, JANET rocked in my first and second years. I was whoring her at 500kbps normally (up and down). I ran game servers occassionally too - 24 player DoD ones were superb, UK people had pings of 10, twas great. Connecting to other servers on JANET was great too - never had a ping higher than 15 for a UK server, most of the time it was single digit.

This year manchester has put in a "black box" to stop all packets with filesharing headers, so noone can download anything unless its ftp or http and ftp they monitor verrrry closely (i worked with the admin bloke on halls support: nice guy but he was a true BOFH) and will cut you off when they feel like it. Glad i moved out now :D

Some of the halls allowed each other to see other networked computers, although not the one i was in but this was nothing certain (non malicious) software couldnt help me with to communicate with others. :hehe:
