This is similar to the ethernet loopback jack on ThinkGeek, but this is a guide that will show you how to build your own for mere pennies on the dollar (pence on the pound?) if you already have the tools. Check it out.

Hehe, when I was in my Cisco class for the CCNA, our Fluke tester broke, so we made those and they work rather well.

I have like 6 of them around here someplace.

I made one similar but used a crimper and a plug rather than a socket to you don't need a cable at all

    Ethernet Loopback Cable on eBay:
    $6.00

    Ethernet Loopback Jack on ThinkGeek:
    $5.99

Parts required for my guide on eBay:
    $2.00

If you were willing to spend ten minutes building your own, you could have six of these things for $2.00. Or you could buy one on eBay or ThinkGeek for $6.00. It may not be "official" (real), but it will get the job done.

That's great.... I've got one of these as well, only I found it inside a compaq server that we ordered for my work. works great.

On another note. Anyone know of a guide to make a crossover dongle

    This might work:

    * Note: I haven't ever used a crossover cable, so I don't know if this would work. Someone let me know if it does.

You will need a Cat5e Keystone jack and a length of cable.

Snip one end of the cable so that you have a plug on one side and 8 wires on the other. Then, push wires 1 and 3 into 2 and 6, and push 2 and 6 into 1 and 3. For example, if the wiring on the plug was:
    1 Orange/White 2 Orange 3 Green/White 4 Blue 5 Blue/White 6 Green 7 Brown/White 8 Brown
You would plug them into the jack in this order:
    1 Orange 2 Orange/White 3 Green 4 Blue 5 Blue/White 6 Green/White 7 Brown/White 8 Brown

You would end up with the keystone jack that you plug the regular cord into and a cord on the other side that is switched.

I might type a guide for this (with pictures) on Wednesday.

The eBay link is for the materials (last one). I was showing how much cheaper it is to build your own, compared to the first two links.

The Reason It uses a jack and not a plugg is so it can be used to test cables. Also why does the one guide you linked to tell you to use 5e cable and then only complete 2 circuits. Gbe uses all 4 and if you were testing a crossover cable it wouldn't work, so you might throw out a perfectly good cable.

I can't be held responsible for information in other guides. They were only inspiration.

You could build one for regular cables and one for crossover cables, if you really wanted to.

[edit]In response to moddenmania, look at one of my previous posts in this thread. Here is what you will be looking for:
I might get a better guide with pictures posted to my website sometime soon. If I do, I'll let you guys know.[/edit]

[edit again]If you were talking about the guide posted on thursday about making the loopback dongle, it should work for crossover cables, too. Crossovers only switch the pairs (1 3 2 6 becomes 2 6 1 3). It seems like that should work, but, once again, I don't know anything about crossover cables.[/edit again]

I think you switch 1/3 and 2/6 between a male and female adaptor (ie M1 to F3, M3 to F1, M2 to F6, M6 to F2 if you know what I mean). Not sure though.

We used something VERY similar in the army to perform Loop Back/Forwards (aka Hotel One and Hotel 2)

However we called it a Donkies Plonker (I have no idea why)
