Anyone heard or had any experience with these?

I'm thinking specifiically about the Gigabyte Radeon RX800 XL 256Mb PCI-Express GV-RX80L256V, although I hear that more brands are bringing product to market.

    Linky

What can I say, I want my cars loud and my PC's quiet.

the heat has to go somewhere, so unless you have good air flow in your case i wouldn't think it to be an amazing idea. Why are you wanting to go passive? if it is down to noise, then an arctic cooler is pretty much silent anyway and cools very well indeed.

I like the idea of total silence more then 'pretty much silent'.

Years ago I knackered a brand new expensive video card in the process of removing the stock HSF, ever since then I've been a bit phobic about it.

The case is reasonably well ventilated (praetorian).

So long as there is good airflow through the case it should be ok, they will have to have tested the design in a poorly ventilated case to prevent them recieving loads back on RMA.

Custom PC reviewed this (I think) and they said it was a brilliant card, but obviously it does need some air flowing over it! :D

I installed it last week, it's great!

No signifcant system temp increase, and the machine is now virtually silent, bliss!

Glad to hear its lived up to its expectations. Any chances of getting some benches as i'm going to be getting an X800XL in 2 months time and wondered if this one manages to retain the same performance as a regular, fan cooled, version.

I managed 5054 in 3DMark '05 the other day, but I haven't updated it for a while, or tried the new catalyst drivers.

You may find better benchmarks by googling for reviews, I did.

Quick update, the card is in the process of being RMA'd.

It died on Sunday, almost 1 week to the day after installation, I'm not impressed.

I think I'll spend the refund on an Asus card and save up to watercool it instead.

The whole point of getting the Gigabyte card was so that I wouldn't risk damaging it whilst trying to silence it.

Unlucky, i guess fanless cooling isnt such a hot idea on a high end card like that.

Ill be getting a regularly cooled one then.

    Unfortunate news there buddy...

Were you cooling it with any additional fans at all?

    Bah, sucks.

I have a CM Praetorian, 2 80mm Vantec Stealths at the front, 1 at the back and another at the blow-hole. All connected through a Nexus controller.

I have an EVO160 Rad behind the front fans, but it doesn't create much extra heat.

The whole system was running pretty cool, I think I just had a duff card. I find it hard to believe it overheated, it certainly didn't fail while in use, it just failed to boot on Sunday.

I've ordered an Asus x800xl, I'll run it for a month, if all is well then I'll slap on one of these bad-boys:

    Linky

As I said earlier, I don't like modding video cards, but if I'm forced to remove the HS/F, then I may as well include it in the H20 loop.
