Mr Bill Softee has enough money already, I think that he should let XP go and start cracking down when Vista comes out. i for one will probably get a legit copy of it, and im not buying XP now!

Win 98SE price hasn't exactly fallen substantially AFAICS...

    Microsoft Windows 98 SE OEM .. £55.00
Microsoft Windows XP Home OEM w/SP2 .. £48.50
Microsoft Windows XP Home Upgrade w/SP2 .. £67.50
Microsoft Windows XP Home Full Version w/SP2 .. £99.00

    (prices http://www.softwareselect.co.uk/ ex VAT)

MS need to ensure that going out and buying a cheap copy of XP doesn't give a cut-price upgrade path to Longhorn for new users.

MS are wanting corperate people to rent software (really does make sense in some ways), but there not doing this home users.

With eOpen, i say buy 5 versions of "office class" application, that means when 2003 came out, i just needed a media kit, i actually borrowed one, (saves £15) because my key is provided automatically for me.

Home users need to get something like that. OEM prices should fall a bit imo.

So what's the big deal here. How about just picking up an OEM copy of Windoze XP Pro for about $100 USD. Or get a corporate disk with a multi-license. :D

Im wondering if all the computers we work on at my job will be affected, because we use the same ghost image on every machine of the same model.

Edit: Ran windows update on my Win2003 rig, and it said nothing.

IT people who used a key found on the net because they'd lost or couldn't be arsed to look for the one that came with the software will be the ones to suffer. :nono:

Hmm. When I go to update with a standard XP Pro box its nagging for the Windows validation thing, but with Windows x64 it says nothing, just the usual update screen. How nice :D

lol this reminds me when SP1 came out. There protection only blocked the FCKGW-RHQQ2 serial, and all you needed was a different serial to install to get it to work. Almost as retarded as those copy protected CDs that are defeated with a sharpie. :)

There are some complete ISO's out there of xp pro (non-corp) that completely ignore the activation process, and are deemed legit by WGA :naughty:

All's I'm saying is that my machine (allong with two other machines with xp pro, and four of my buddies machines with xp pro) updates without a problem on microsofts website. :D

There was a Windows keygen a while back, but the subset of keys it generated were blocked by SP1.

And of course, posting any info on such generators would earn the perpatrator an instant perma ban from these forums. :blah:

I won't bother repeating what I wrote here, since saying it once was more than enough.

Froggy, the only problem you'll find is if sysprep wasn't run on the Ghost image as the SIDs would all be the same, and I am hoping that it was a corporate edition that was cloned.

Have you tried Microsoft Update yet, which replaces Windows Update once you visit the site. It's so much better than WU as it covers a much wider selection of Microsoft software, such as Exchange, SQL, Office... saves a lot of time!

How do you get the WGA thing, coz on windows updates (my xp and 2003 rigs) its says nothing about WGA, just about the updates #

Edit: I did custom and it says i need to validate :duh: :wallbash: :wallbash:
