...but I'm going to ask anyway Could you check over this spec and see if theres anything that I've got wrong... IE incompatibilities, hardware thats complete shite etc. This PC will be built for my neighbours and will be used for office, internet etc. I was going to use the Asus K8S-MX mobo which is roughly the same price, but it is out of stock and we want to order tomorrow. Am I right in thinking the VIA chipset on the gigabyte will be better than the SiS on the Asus anyway? I am also aiming to keep it fairly quiet, I know from experience that the Akasa HSF is very quiet and efficient, and I will probably run the Tricools at low or medium speed depending on temps.
For what it is? Well, those component prices are what it actually costs... So I dont see how it could be done any cheaper. Or do you mean my build charge?
As roto said, its worth the extra, you'll kick yourself if you dont tbh...cpu will be ~ a tenner more, and a reasonable AGP NF3 939 board can be had for ~ 50 quid 2nd hand (look to the k8n neo2 from MSI or the DFI NF3)
I know how good 939 systems are, I have one myself. This is for my neighbours, and they are on a tight budget so don't need to pay £40 (£20 more for proc and £20 for mobo) for a difference they won't notice. They don't need upgradeability. Their current system is a 486 which they bought new in 1994.
Specs look fine to me if upgrading it is a non-issue. It'll be a nice change for them going from a 486 to a 64-bit Athlon machine
Yup, for the last month or so they've been running on a K6-2 500 machine borrowed from me, which is held together by duct tape since it's an AT mobo in a case not designed for one.... It works, but I told them I wanted it back
Dude, its a K6-500, why would you want it back? Just do the decent thing, take ol' rover into the backyard with a shovel and put it out of its misery
You're getting a 2800+ cpu, corsair ram, and a pc that costs £575 and it doesn't have a videocard. Only the integrated one. You're paying too much for this pc. For almost £600 you could get a better pc then that.
