Only thing I ever fried while Sleeving was a brand new DVD-ROM... Did I get the connectors wrong? Nope, I didn't traighten out the tang (Crap Molex removal tool... Damn you Vantec!) , so +12v and 0v collided when +12v slipped out of the Molex... and I watched the pretty magic blue smoke waft away in the air, knowing I had just fried summat.. luckily I had a replacement the next day for 12 quid...

thats why you always need to label the wires (atleast thats what I do so I can avoid these moments) hehe

This is why you should backup your stuff guys, esspecially before you mod things like the PSU.

That's the reason why you should simply check what the bloody hell you're doing when changing molexes (and also check them out when you're finished with an old HD.). :)
    Unlucky tbh.

...and that is the reason that i decided against sleeving and just opted for lovely 3mm spiral wrap!
lol.sorry to hear about the hdd's dudes.but yeh, regular backups of 'important data' (read:music, net faves and 'stuff' ;) )is crucial!

Does it matter if the two black wires are the wrong way round? I cant imagine that doing any harm as they're both ground. But they're seperate for a reason...

The black wires don't matter if they are switched cause f you trace them back to the psu they all are at the same area. But what happened to this poor mate was he had the +5 and +12 switched which gave too much power to the board.

    ouch
i remember losing a hard drive on windows 98 was a sad day
lost stacks of documents and it took ages to find appropriate drivers again

its amazing how few people properly backup their machines
especially with how cheaply large 250GB+ external drives can be picked up for

It amazes me how you people can make that mistake. I never have (but then again, I don't mod PSUs all too often). Wouldn't you compare it to another wire in the PSU? Or like, to some other wire? I did when I put UV-reactive molexes on my PSU.

When i get at doing stuff like that, i use one of those fan connectors that came with old CPU fans for Intel MMX processors, the ones that pass through all 4 lines and split out 12V for the fan.

I just jack one of them onto each newly added connector to the PSU and check that the colors match.

I smoked a DVD drive by mis-wiring a y-splitter... but it was still under warranty and I got it replaced no problem :D just said it 'suddenly stopped working'

I also made this mistake once. Switched the +5V lead with the +12V lead.. Turn it on a turned down right away.
One of my disks smeled really nasty. (Burned) after correcting the wiring tried once more ans still the drive works flawless eversince, more then a year now!
    So lucky me I guess
