http://www.google.com/talk/ The software has been released. It uses the open-source Jabber protocol. Earlier today you could connect to talk.google.com as a Jabber server using Gaim, but it doesn't seem to work any more. The software is pretty simple and sleek at this point. If anyone would like to add me, you can IM at tekmonkey (AT) gmail.com. edit: An interesting note is that it pulls all your contacts from your Gmail account and adds them to a list you can choose to add IM contacts. Also, note that the interface has a search box on it to search through your list of contacts. I find this a bit pointless, unless you have hundreds of contacts. AND Bruno_me pointed out this link that tells you how to configure it with Gaim. They've just changed the server to gmail.com from talk.google.com since earlier this afternoon.
Sounds like we need to upgrade our user-notified News system: I'm nearly 2 hours behind you guys http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2005/08/24/google_talk_beta/ Note - we don't really have such a system, aside from mailing news@bit-tech.net but wouldn't it be cool to say "hey guys - just saw this breaking story somewhere. You might want to take a look" ?
