So I'm replacing the fan in my PSU. The one that's already in it has two wires, red and black. The one I'm replacing it with has 3.

What should I do? I was expecting to just have to do a bit of cutting and stripping and electrical taping, but I'm unsure what to do with this extra wire.

It's for the tachometer, which tells your fanbus or mobo how fast the fan's spinning. Leaving it unconnected won't effect the fan at all, but you won't know if it's stopped spinning. As long as you get the fan to spin fast, it'll work so I guess nothing else matters :)

I just removed the original fan, cut off the wires near to the plug, did the same with the new fan, did some stripping, and voila!

I don't know if it works yet. Will discover shortly.
