I've got a X300 and I can play command and conquer generals ok, and even the new AOE3 demo, not tryed anything FPS wise as I only use it on the train so don't have an external mouse but I would guess you'd be ok with the games you mention. it does get really hot when you play games and it kill sthe battery (I can work for about 90 minutes but game for less than 40 on a battery charge)

The 610 is a good laptop bit bigger than the x300 but you get a built in CD/DVD drive and the batterys last better.

Really depends what you want... I love mine cos it's small and light and as I carry it around all day for work and use it on the train it's good for me.

Battery life is a bit of a problem but I usually find somewhere to charge it in the day so it's no biggy and it is uncomforable to game with it on my lap due to the heat but thankfully most of the time I get a seat on the train with some kind of table.

Speaking from experience with these and the 810 models, from my office, we've had quite a few go bad, and by that they went really bad, they thought they were always docked, apparently the motherboards were at fault, one employee we've had to replace his laptop 4 times because of this, his was a 610 with XP Pro, now you may be fine if you don't plan on using a docking station, but we've had to replace all of the ones in our first batch of 800 series once (that was 20 of those) and the random 600/610's

Acer's make very good laptops, roommate has one of those - the highest level one, x700 with 128mb mem etc. I've got a Sager, it's good, 256mb x700, but no bluetooth, however no complaints other than that.

I haven't used them myself, but haven't heard any complaints, Toshiba's are decent, HP's aren't horrible, It's really about taste, Sager was a high end gamer-type notebook with a 256 mb x700, the other thing I would suggest is definitely get a 7200 rpm drive (usually a 60gb) 15" is more than enough screen wise, Centrino's are the way to go for notebooks :)

    ~2 Ghz Centrino
    60 gb 7200 rpm HDD
15" Screen, I would go full screen, not a fan of wide screens too much
    1 gb ram min
Dedicated video memory (at least 128mb)

That would last quite awhile. and should be able to handle alot of recent games as well :dremel:

Go for the new Acer Ferrari laptop. Veyr good price, within £50 of what you said, and has a X700 graphics card, and a Turion processor, and carbon fibre finish. I like the looks, some might not, but worth a look. Avaiable on ebuyer.

x600 isnt bad but it isnt wonderful either, and im assuming you want something that will last for a while and not get dated which an x600 will suffer from.

    Dell 9200? 9700 graphics.
