Windows nothing will work please please help

    hi well im on my laptop and no icons work nothing works ecept firefox in the start panel. all the icons turned to open with icons eg itunes.ink use web to open select appropriate or select program from list and no icons are in the bottom right panel i can get into control panel.what do i do?? please please help

    REBOOT

    EDIT: yes I mean a hard reboot if you have to

    it wont boot of the cd drive i have been into the bios and tried all different settings but to no avail

    did you happen to copy the icon from another location? Because sometimes if you make a copy of another icon it messes up...

    no i no what you mean but i mean nothing will work avg, games, programs the no files of disc or external hardrive will work either

    anything like this ever happened before i cannot even do a hard reboot

    I'm confused as to what happens when you try to do a hard boot. Also, what exactly are you seeing on your desktop? How did you get into the BIOS if you can't reboot? Are you working on one system and posting on another? If you are able to get into the Control Panel, can you do the following:

    (Classic View)

    Folder Options >>> File Types tab

    What do you see?

    ryte ok sorry im very confussing ok i can get on to system when i do i see all blank icons and when ik try to open them i g f.e.a.r.ink open using web or select program and its not just the desktop evcey item everywere in the whole computer does it ecept the control panel but none of the things in control panel work either. i can only use fiorefox. i can get in bios but it wont let me boot from cd to reinstall windows an d i dontr have no way of reformatting

    Boot into safe mode and use a restore point (if you haven't turned that off).
    To boot from CD, check your BIOS boot order settings, and of course have a good bootable XP CD.....

    if the laptop is a toshiba you might have to hold the C button while turning it on to get it to boot from cd

    i get the same problem in safe mode ive tried changing the order of the boot mode ive tried booting from cd still no luck

    At this point you might want to contact the manufacturer. Is it still under warranty? Your hard drive, motherboard or another important piece of hardware may be pooched. Sorry.
