I was just pondering over the thought about 18-rated computer games and the outcry by society because of children playing them

Remember over the summer about the the Hot Coffee mod for GTA? Hillary Clinton was firmly against games like them enquiring into a $90 million research about the effects of them to children.

However I personally believe that it should be the responsibility of the individual who purchases games like GTA to make sure it does not fall into the hands of those under-age. Instead of spending $90 million finding out the impacts, why not invest the amount into effective promotion and advertising the age requirements for games? Why can't active computer game retail chains like GAME employ more stringent awareness for parents, such as applying more notices, signs and stickers on their products?

Do you think that the adult narrative and content of future computer games are at risk from being censored and banned?

I think the title of this is unfair, it's the peole who complain who are ruining it. If the box says that it's and 18 and a kid under that age is playing it then the person who gave it to him in the wrong. It stupid to ruin every thing because some one can not stick to a simple system that is in place, Come on it's a number not hard to figure out.

Wow I am really rantish today I apologise, and is rantish a word?

Yup, kids ruin games. Online games the little brats need to be separated from us proper, mature gamers so you cut out all the "HAX!!! OMFG!! CHEAT!!" and the parents should be more responsible - like keeping them away from 18 movies or porn. It's absoultely NO excuse that "they will get to see it anyway" imo.

Hilary Clinton is such a knee-jerk actress it's laughable. It just goes to show how desperate she wants the job at the top.

I don't think the thread title is unfair, its keeping the topic open for discussion whether kids do or don't spoilt it for adults. As for the complainers ruining the gaming scene, I think there should be a cause for concern if there are behaviour, pyschological and social affects linked between adult games and children.

I just don't think its worthwhile trying to invest into the effects on children, where I believe it should be for promoting the age certificates.

    :worried:

If kids are 18 then wtf am I?

Seriously though, games are games. Like movies some are for familys, some can be enjoyed by everyone and some are for adults only. Non-gamers who say games are for kids annoy me.

    That and Jack Thompson.

They are rated 18 cause they are ADULT games containing ADULT values. There are no 18 games aimed at kids, it just doesnt happen. Just because it's a game doesnt mean it's for kids. But kids games rule though, you dont need blood and violence to have fun.

    :)

Personally i think its the parents that ruin it for both the kids and the adult gamers. A parent should have no business getting involved in the gaming industry, they should be more involved in choosing what there kids can and cant play.

However, you probably wouldn't be saying that if the age requirement on most of your favorite games was 30 (or whatever, you see my point).

There's so much wrong with that, I'm actually laughing out loud and hoping you're kidding.

I think the problem is the way games are marketed by the games industry. Advertising and pre-release campaigns are generally so immature, that it's not exactly surprising that games are still seen as a kids domain despite the demographics. I just wish games makers and publishers would take a more sophisticated and adult attitude to it all (especially where games are 18 certs or obviously mature in content). When the over-riding tactic to get a game on the cover of a mag or in a shop window is either big tits or big guns, it's no wonder they're written off as adolescent past-times. They're are a few exceptions to this rule, but before the games industry bleats on about being misunderstood they should take a long hard look at the crap that makes up the vast majority of what they sell. Lets see more games like Fahrenheit, Rez, and Ico. Instead of yet more guns, explosions, cliched sci-fi art design, and hackneyed action schtick.

Firstly, you should know the facts - THE AVERAGE AGE OF A GAMER IS 28.

Explain to me how we're sad? We make the games in the first place. All adults are entitled to play games, just as much as children (if not more in the case of 18+ games).

Secondly, the problem usually lies with the parents. If they actually restricted what games their children played in the first place, then they wouldn't complain about the 18+ games.

Thirdly, the problem also lies with the retailers. 18+ should be enforced. If a movie or game or whatever states 18+ on the box (I'm using UK ratings here, sorry), then the retailer should demand ID.

I wouldn't blame the kids, as they're not at fault. The day that the world wakes up, and realises games aren't just for kids, and that restrictions should be in place and abided by, is the day that all this stops. Until then, we're left with those high up getting their knickers in a twist because you can see pixelated boobs. Nice. What a world we live in.

its not really fair blaming kids for ruing games but on that note itsd not fair saying that games are aimed at kids. whoever said that your a kid at 18 i dunno bout you but how many kids can watch porn. 18 is bottom off adulthood thats why alot of things are 18. like for instance you dont have to have a parent to give a statment at 18 ect ect so i think you should change the title and whoever made the statement about aiming games at kids should withtract
