I have been out of the loop of computers for some time. I am looking to start college in the spring and I am in need of a laptop. I am looking at something under 2,000 usd. Now I plan on using the pc mainly for college but I would like something with some guts. I would also like to use it for LAN parties on the weekends. I would like to kinda stay away from an all out gaming laptop due to the fact I need to get great battery life. I would also like something that is going to last me and not become a paper weight after 2 years. Now for the idea of that I would like, at least 2 GHz cpu, hard drive space at least 60 gig at would like a 7200 rpm drive, anything else does not really matter to much to me.

also if this helps i am looking to for something that will handle any game i throw at it for the most part.
i am really big in to couter strike, halo, F.e.a.r and other games like that

If you want a laptop that can play FEAR at a decent res (or even indecent), you won't get that battery life. I'd almost suggest trying to ebay a used laptop with decent battery life and get a SFF for the lans with the remaining money.

What do you guys think of the HP zd8000 series notebook note book?
I was looking at something like this

    Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
    Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 640 w/HT Technology, 3.2GHz
    17.0" WXGA+ Bright View Wide Viewing (1440x900)
    512MB DDR2 SDRAM, 533MHz (2x256MB)
60 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
    DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
    54g(TM) Integ. Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN & Bluetooth
    256MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) X600
Extra 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Not a P4! Pentium M in the ONLY way to go in a laptop, and an x600 hardly cuts it compared to something like a 6800/7800 in an XPS.

Consider the Evesham C720 Voyager, as that sounds awesome (infact i ahev ordered and am awaiting one). Otherwise look at Sager and Hypersonic too, they offer some excellent sounding laptops.

Make sure you go for Centrino, or Turion if you go AMD.

So a 2 GHz Centrion is very fast, probably up there with a 3.6GHz Pentium 4 from what i ahev heard. No gaming with integrated graphics. if you want to use it to game, a GoForce 6600, or X700 should be the min.

    Good Luck

In my experience, 7200 RPM drives are nice and fast, but they'll suck your battery life quick.

If you're looking for battery life like you say, go with a 5400. Avoid the 4800 that most OEMs stick in there base units.

    YMMV

Much lower power consumption = much better battery life
