well my school have a solution called 'Freedom2Teach' which is a box that sits between the internet connection and the rest of the network therefore all the internet traffic has to go though it and as long as you block all the proxy websites then it is impossible to get around unless you can deactivate the box and then all you do is set 'key words' for it to scan the traffic for and then it can filter them and if it is not allowing stuff it should then all yo do is add and address to its 'allowed' list.

I'm thinking of going the VNC route instead, would allow for real-time monitoring...

One question to you all - is it possible to screenshot VNC?

When ever I have tried to take a screen shot while VNC was open no matter how many times I would press printscreen and when I tried to paste there would be nothing.

You should have a clear policy on use of resources with a set disciplinary procedure so that it's fairly easy to scare the students into regulating their own browsing.

I hadn't even thought of that, very nice idea. A Computer/Internet usage policy would work, as we could get students to sign it when they enrol. It would work as a scare tactic, and would also outline what they can and can't do.

I'm thinking fraps (or similar) might allow for VNC screenshots?

I think it probably would, although if you were looking for a quicker, albeit less usefull solution, I believe alt+prnt screen only captures the app that you're focussed on, it'd be fine if you quickly needed to get a grab and fraps wasn't open.

There are two options - try and block stuff and have an agreement that each student has to agree to before they can use the computers.

The blocks can (will) be circumvented by things like proxys or whois lookups.
The agreements can be in the form of a formal document signed upon enrollment as well as 'reminder' screens on startup.

But the thing is PrintScreen doesn't work with a vnc window open, the paste data isn't there.

Oh, sorry about that, I hadn't tested it out, I just know that alt+prnt screen takes a screenshot of the active window, didn't consider that it wouldn't take a shot of VLC, sorry.

I dunno about your school, but at mine if everyone was told who had been looking at "adult content" then everyone would be too embarassed to. They would be the laughing stock of the class for ever.

If it's a public school, then they're not YOUR computers. They're the taxpayer's computers, and the taxpayers can use them for whatever the hell they want.

Government censorship of the internet is a brutal miscarraige of the First Amendment. I'm personally itching for a court case so that the Supreme Court can say "The government can't censor things in a public place, so lose the webfilters, bitch."

Yeah, so? Censoring the internet because minors have the ability to break the law is like banning cars because people have the ability to hit people with them.

you've got to pass a test which shows you have reasonable control to drive a car. Unless you do it illegally...

you don't need a permit to buy a baseball bat, and as far as i know, there is no age req. to own one.

does this mean that every computer in the united states must have a WebCensor? theoretically, a minor can get on any comp that has a net connection, and then access porn.

what would you do if the Man busted into your crib and confiscated your computer because your neighbors kids might get in an unlocked window and download porn (or look at the pics on your HDD)?

so you'd let your kids access hardcore pornography...
willingly let them access that kind of material that has been deemed illegal to view until they're 18 or 21 in some states of America (unlucky usa)
