Okay guys here is the scenario -

I have a P4 computer that was given to me a while ago. I got it up and running last night and started looking into it a little closer. Upon closer inspection i found out that the chip is a P4 1.6GHz chip with 256MB of RDRAM running (I have 2 dimm slots available). I dont know the make of the board so i cant give you that information.

    My questions are -
    1) Can I take this chip and place it in another motherboard that makes use of DDR memory without any problems?

    2) If the answer to the above question is no then will i be able to add more RDRAM to the system?

Any and all feedback is welcome!

    Thanks!

Soulfly, would you be giving up the Rdram?

I am in the same boat as you, and 512 would be alot better than 256!

If that board would work with the chip then i would definately give up the RDRAM.... i priced out a 512 stick of samsung on newegg and it was $212... more than i care to spend on this project.

RD ram is that expensive, cheaper to move over to DDR mate :)

I had a Intel system with RD ram, ages ago in about 2000, had 256mb too, didnt bother upgrading to 512 as as you can see - rd ram prices are ridicoulous. (sp?)

RDRAM is proprietary and is only fabbed by Rambus, which is why it's so pricey. I'm not even sure if they make the desktop modules any more; they seem to be concentrating on ultra-high speed systems for consoles and the like.

Definitely hop onto the DDR bandwagon if you can - RDRAM died a long time ago.

They still make it, and the house server is on it as well, but I don't buy, I scavenge. I scored some 1066 a while back, nice stuff...

First off, check and see what socket it is. If its socket 423, youre probably stuck with RD-RAM. If its 478, put that sucker on a DDR based board and put some cheap DDR RAM in it :D

Is the sytem you got a dell?

    Mine is.

    Old family PC.

I am building an AMD rig tho.

Gonna use this as secondary for when my mate comes over for some gaming.

The first 478's that Intell made were the 2.0 GHz, if I remember correctly, but what I do know is that the CPU that you have is a Willamette core and is 423, so unless you can find some PC-600 RDRAM, you're screwed.

I pretty much already accepted that it is a 423... now just to find some cheap RDRAM... ha!

It's not fabbed by Rambus, companies by lisenses off Rambus and then produce it. Unlike DDR which anyone can make free. You could buy Hynix and Samsung RDRAM at the time.

Really? I wasn't aware that they licensed it; guess you learn something new every day :).

Run CPU-Z to find out what socket type and core it is.
