Get a vw golf. An older one and work on the engine. mk1 would do just fine. Rip the interior out weld on a cage and add a turbo. Would make one nice track goer.

Possibly yeah. Like I said, it won't be until much later this year when I'll actually get a new car, so I'll only be selling it once I have the new one sorted.

Looks pretty nice after having a quick look at the specs and what people say about it in reviews. Seems to be a nice balance between old-school hot hatch and something a bit more sensible (relatively modern technology, space for passengers etc). It's definitely a car I'm going to consider!

Forgot about that one, they're supposed to be a great car too, plus they're fairly sensible as family cars. :D

    Newish 2nd hand Ka - £4k
    3 Weeks at Pumaspeed - £3k

A ka that does 6s 0-60 is a 1.7 and has uprated brakes and all for just £7k. Will beat a fiesta ST in all but top top end (and costs less than half the price)
Insurance is defo less than group 12.

How about a Honda CRX ?
That's a real hot car! It has enough power and a sporty design... plus a huge tuning community!!!

Like Bindibadgi says a honda crx vtec can be picked up for about £2000 absolutly mint. Fun high revving engines and a very light car. Maybe a polo G40? quite a lot of potential because of the supercharger and they can look really smart with some nice bbs wheels on them. I've seen a few around on the net with 160bhp+. Toyota starlet GT is another one.

Nope, that was electroJunky. But I appreciate being noticed none the less. :)
Honda make nice cars, and Jap cars seem to run FOREVER.

What would the insurance be like after declaring the engine swap?

I've thought about a CRX since a lot of people say they're fun and the most recent ones don't look bad either. Again, anyone know what the insurance is like?

N15 phase 2 Nissan Almera GTi, 2.0l 140isdh BHP lots of space in side and very quick, loads of tuninig potential form the SR20DE engine (nissans most popular engine) cheap running and services costs, no cam belt as its chain driven and will not need to be changed

you can pick up a VGC S reg for around £1500-£2000 with PAS, ABS Air Con Elec everything.
very comfortable cars to drive, great handling and can get alot of things in it, its probably one of the best all rounders

Probably not what you are looking for. But with 12000£, I would try and fine a used BMW 818i in good shape (around 1999). I don't know how your insurance systems works, but I reckon it might be a bit too expensive ?

    Good luck with the car,
    L
