Okay, i have two computers. I want to setup a network for a few reasons:
    1. Hands-on experience
    2. simplify everything

So as it stands right now the network looks like this:
Inet -> Router -ethernet> Main PC (XP Pro)
Router -WiFi> Tablet PC (XP Pro)
WiFi -> Digital Media Player (attached to tv)
All on local workgroup... blah blah blah, easy stupid this isnt what i want

    Here is what i want:
I want my main computer (currently running xp pro) to be a server. But i want to use the new free VMWare to setup a multitude of virtual servers.

    QUESTION:
Should i install xp media center and vmware diff servers on top of that? (what i would like to do)
    or
Should i install xp 2003 server, then VMWare diff servers on top of that (including an XP pro or media for personal use)

I will continue on after this question is answered (trying to take this step by step)

Personally I would go for server 2003, its much faster, reliable and is designed to do the job whilst media centre isn't.

However, if you are wanting to run media centre in VMWare off Server 2003, you may get performance/quality losses, you might want to test it out beforehand, no harm in doing so as you can always reinstall.
