Cooling Is one 120mm rad enough?

    Hey gang.

In building my PC mod (SG-PC, coming soon), I've come against
a problem trying to fit my BIX2 inside my Lian Li V1000.
With two 7800GTX's fitted with DD low profile waterblocks, there is no
room for the BIX2 (+2 120mm fans) on the inside roof of the case as
I originally planned. So I thought maybe downgrading to a single BIX 120mm.

What I wanted to know is, if a single 120mm rad is enough for this w/c loop:
    rad>res>pump>cpu>2xGPU>

    Cheers....

Running an SLI system on a single BIX is pushing it a bit. Depending on what CPU you have, you are dealing with about 270 to 290 Watts of heat. I am running a total of 220 Watts (two Opteron 250s and a Radeon 9800Pro) on a single BIX and it manages fine, but there is little headway left.

Consider a BIP2. They perform just as well as a BIX2 (sometimes even better; a thinner rad means better airflow per fan CFM) and have a much thinner profile. If you use 120x25mm fans you may just be able to tuck it all in.

    Thanks for the reply Fr4nk.

I was pretty doubtful myself about using just one rad, but I thought
it best to check with all the learned modders here at bit-tech.

Shame about Aqua Computer not shipping to Australia, they have
    some pretty good stuff. :sigh:

I can't really have a rad in my 5.25" bays because I have plans for that
    area already

I'm now thinking about two 120mm rads, one at bottom intake and one
at the rear exhaust hole (inside the case though)
    What you think?
    Oh, I'm cooling an FX57....

    Cheers Nexxo;
I've got 30/35mm to spare, the Asus A8n32 SLi Deluxe
mobo has the second PCIe slot near the edge of the board, which
leaves less space between GPU #2 and the top of the case - damn!
I also won't be able to use my X-Fi Elite Pro either, there's no free PCI slot
thanks to the GPU waterblocks and all their mounting gear. :wallbash:

How about fitting your BIX2 outside the case?
It may not be the look you're going for though. I know I like things to all fit internally.

Two rads may well work. Have you thought about separate loops for your cpu and gpu?

Let's not complicate matters with double loops... :worried:

An FX57 puts out 110 Watts. An SLI'd 7800 will be about 150 Watts. So you're looking at losing 260 Watts. I'd think two BIPros would work nicely.

Thanks for the reply. I am indeed thinking of a dual loop, one
for CPU/NB, and one for the GPU's - might be overkill though; I'm still
    debating.
I really want to avoid anything outside the case, if possible.

    Nexxo:
What a crack up! lol. Before I finish my post you've put yours up
debunking what I was about to say (looks over shoulder suspiciously).
    So, scratch the dual loops....
Thanks for the thermal load figures too.
I really am seeing the two single 120mm BIP's, so I agree with you there
mate. I'll just measure up where the exhaust fan would go to see if a BIP
    will fit

Here's a current "state of affairs":

I thought I had it all worked out, oh how wrong was I?!
Just have to rethink the parts I'll use for the w/c loop, so as to
keep all parts within the case....

Why not use a bracket and mount a bix2 externally at the back?

...yeah, I could go out the back with a BIX2; I nearly settled for the rad on top (where I began to brainstorm ideas for making it look o.k),
but ultimately I want it all within the existing dimensions (don't we all?).

So, I'll make a decision as to alternative radiator-ing,
and of course any further imput from the collective genius that is
the bit-tech modding community - is warmly welcomed and appreciated.

    Try a BIP3 or a BIP2 they're about 1-1.5 inches thick I believe and the triple is better than a BIX2
