How do I speed test it?

    Dear Mr John Barber,

PlusNet are pleased to confirm that your broadband regrade to BT IPStream
    Max is now complete.

Please note: You may need to reboot your modem or router before you can
    experience your new speed.

    Bandwidth (kbit/s) up/down = 448 / 8128
    Attenuation (dB) up/down = 9.0 / 11.0
    Noise Margin (dB) up/down = 22.0 / 11.5

Download Speed: 6671 kbps (833.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 370 kbps (46.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Finally getting some good speeds. =D

I was supposedly upgraded at the end of April but I've yet to actually see anything higher than 2000kbps on the BT speed test. Strangely enough I managed to briefly reach 600kBps while downloading from microsoft - average was around 450-550kBps - last Friday.

I was supposedly upgraded on 25 April. However, I'm still only connecting at 1152/288.

    Attenuation (U/D): 7/16
    Margin (U/D): 25/31

I spoke to BT, but the chap I spoke to didn't really know anything. He just kept saying that I have to wait 10 days for it to find the optimal speed for my line (despite the fact that it's been 18 days).

They predicted I'd get about 5 Mbps before, and judging by my SNR/Attenuation figures some people think I should be getting about 7 Mbps. So, obviously, I'm a bit peeved, and am beginning to wonder whether they've screwed something up.

While 4.4mbps is okay, according to the speedtest on adslguide, I was hoping for more. I'm just under 500m from the exchange. I'm syncing at 8128/448 with a downstream noise margin of 11db and attenuation downstream 21db. I think the first day I was max'd, I got something like 770mbps (which rings true with the 'you might get this or above' sites) then it's been all over the place. I hope it doesn't settle at a low speed after the 10 days.

Is it best to leave the router on all the time, or switch it off at night?

    Damn you all!!!

I'm paying $55 a month for 600 kb cable modem service because it's either that or put up with even slower DSL here. Can I get a visa as a refugee from slow internet!!!

In theory, I should be getting 6mbps or above, according to the checkers. I very rarely score 2mbps using this link.

Same here, I'm getting 1904kbps even though I regulary download at my full 2.2mbps, these things aren't that accurate anyway!

I should be getting 7mbps within the next week

Glad to hear it... I'm supposed to be getting 512/256 kpbs up/down, but the test gave me a speeds of 48/142. And the whole point of the "Asymmetrical" in ADSL, is that the upload speeds are lower! :p

w00t, finally got my upgrade this morning. After some testing I'm getting a stable 860KB/s.

    860KB/s = 7,045,120 bits per second = 7.0Mbps - I'm happy

Hopefully my ISP will see the 7Mbps as stable and keep that speed.

I'm getting mine tomorrow afternoon. Since the building next door to my flat is my exchange, I'd better be getting the full monty or I'll be reet annoyed.

When they say distance, isn't it the line distance and not the physical distance that matters? So even if you live 500m or so away, the line may go on for more than that before it gets to you. Makes sense if the signals are going down the line...Would be a ******* if you lived next door and the line stretched out forever underneath :p

I might upgrade but I don't want to pay more for the same speed I have now (1mbit). 8mbit does seem fickle about the line conditions.

Yes, it's the line distance that matters. :)

No, that's only if you live in LLU enabled areas and LLU is completely different to ADSL Max. I think the maximum speed you can get with LLU technology in the UK is actually 22mbps rather than 24.

ADSL Max only supports up to 8.1Mbps and to get that you need to live very close to the exchange and have little noise on the line.
