    I added the following to the discussion page of the pc building article, but I wanted to post it here to see what people think of the idea....

    Very good idea to make articles that follow one another -

    perhaps they could be the following (all of which have been discussed in one form or another.)

    * Parts list articles
    1. Dream Machine Parts List (Greater than $1300.00 / €1000.00)
    2. High end gaming rig Parts List ($1000.00 to $1300.00 / €800.00 to €1000.00)
    3. Midrange gaming machine Parts List ($750.00 to $1000.00 / €600.00 to €800.00)
    4. General computing / Lowend gaming machine ($500.00 to $7500.00 / €400.00 to €600.00)
    5. Inexpensive computer (Less than $500.00 / €400.00)
    - People keep asking for this in the bit-tech forums - this would be a perfect place to send them
    - We could set up a Parts List category so that they were easy to find and link that category off the main page
    * Computer Assembly article
    - Most of us are probably pretty familiar with this, but it would be a good idea to have it.
    * OS Installation articles
    1. Windows xp installation
    2. Windows vista beta installation
    3. Mac OSX86 installation instructions (without actually linking to any illegal so ftware.)
    4. Linux flavor a installation (Bit-tech's first choice (Debian?))
    5. Linux flavor b installation

    What do you guys think?

    Edit -
    I forgot one...

    Thats one hell of a low end machine for $7500 :D

    I was thinking that the n00b build guide would be a good idea.

    Er - yeah...

    It's for all that low end protein folding and 3d rendering and - uh - low end professional video encoding of 5 streams at a time and uh.....

    Yeah.. Low end....

    (Thanks for catching it - I will correct it in the wiki.)

    Anyway - I still think we should break up the article we have into

    1. parts list articles
    2. assembly article
    3. OS installation articles

    and as far as "selecting components" goes -(if you want to come up with your own parts list,)- the only real article we should have is going to say "do research - come to a conclusion."

    I mean, I really don't think a processor decision should be made based off of a ten item pros and cons list - there's a lot more to it than that. On top of that, it's going to become outdated quickly - It appears that the core duo processors get more performance and less heat per cpu cycle than any of AMDs chips - when it's mainstream to have a core duo in your desktop then that whole pros - cons list will need to be re-written.

    Is there anything legally wrong with pulling stuff off wikipedia? Because for basic things, like explaining what the components are, wikipedia is quite good... And as it is all editable and such, is there any copyright I would be breaking if I copied a whole load of component overview articles from wikipedia?

    It'd be a hell of a lot quicker than people here writing them...

    A fair ammount of stuff on Wikipedia is either pulled off other sites (without Wikipedia's knowledge) or copied by other sites. This does not always guarantee quality or accuracy. As Sam0r says, we should stick to our own material.

    Can't agree more. Keep it home grown! Last thing we need is a mish mash of plagiarised crap.

    Its gonna be down for a few days, two drives in the raid array died and took the whole lot with it.

    Don't worry, the database is stored on a separate machine so all your stuff is safe:)

    A wiki would indeed be useful, as it could provide one point of referance for anything modding-related. A complete electronics section could cut down on easily-answered posts by at least 15%

    Easily answered posts would be cut down by that if people just read the sticky about laptop screens. :D

    About usernames etc...

    Linking to forum accounts is definately a good idea... it provides some comeback, will virtually halt wikispam, as there are consequences for vandalism (ban from forum & wiki).

    Maybe having a 10-20 post limit before allowing somone to edit a page would be a good idea? similar to the fs&w forums, to cut down on people/scripts registering an account just to vandalise the wiki.

    Pity its down, as i fancied having a good look around it tonight :/
