Acually (I think) only the last number is the firmware version. It's acually K6XXYZ. XX is the interface type (10 Async/SPI, 11 RS485/SPI, 12 RS232/SPI), Y is the power (A is 5v/500mA, C is 12v/250mA), and Z should be the firmware version. So if you want one that works with RS485 and runs on 12 volts, get the K611C3 instead :).

    Hope this helps.

I presume u can do 20fps with these serial ones ??

Could u make some really l33t animations when switching to stuff like winamp etc?

/me thinks about the pioneer car stereos with the dolphin animations

Nice one Spike, i was thinking the same! So we're looking at 50squid plus VAT for these babies, and we can create animation for them how? The outputs you had from LCDC are great Cheese, love to know a lil more about animation, can LCDC cope, i haven't really used my LCD since my mobo died and the poor student i am can't afford a new one, but may be able to afford one of these! lol for now on a decrepid 266... :(

Unfortunatly, not with the serial displays...

    19600 baud, 126x32 = 4032 pixels. 19600 / 4032 gives 4.8
complete frames per second. It's actually lower than that,
because there is the command transmission and processing
overhead too. I'd say 4fps was about maximum, and you need
at least 12 for animation. You could probably do an FFT
scope for WinAMP at around 15 fps if it wasn't too big.

That's basically why I got the parallel display, you can do
about 1000 fps! I have some nice animations going :)

As CheeseMan said, it is harder to connect a parallel
interface, but worth it I think. Shame about the software,
although I did find this WinAMP plug-in:

Yep as the man says, a full screen bitmap animation at 20fps is a no no, though a full screen of text at 20fps isn't a problem o/c. Also a winamp bar equaliser or scope should be doable, or a screen with a couple of small animated icons (spinning discs etc.).

LCDC might be able to handle a little bit of icon animation, I'm playing with that atm, but a winamp equaliser in LCDC seems out of the question at the moment.

    Cheers,

    r.

Hey AmiMoJo, what programs do you use or do you write them yourself? I'd really love to do the animation and so i guess shall have to look into the // displays but i'm really not clued up enough to write my own software. If your able to map every single pixel then linux would be so easy to use for some serious 3D anime, have to look into this a bit closer.

I write my own software, in C and/or assembler as appropriate.
You could do some Linux software fairly easily if you knew
how to code, the parallel interface is quite easy to use.
I'll put up a web site with software, code and hardware
    details at some point.

    nice , Very Nice !

too bad there is only a 5V output ...
but thats just 1 little minor ...

I'm very impressed ... I was on the edge of buying a Matrix orbital (the one that has been reviewed by bit-tech) , but now I'm doubting !!! (damn you) lol

its very positive that it only needs 1 bay slot .. cuz I only have 1 available

well uhm ... thats about all I have to say about this ...

    nice...

    Waahaay!

Great displays - I really want one but can't afford anything at the moment!

Have been thinking 'bout getting a display for a while (was gonna go with MO, either a graphic LCD or a nice funky VFD) - but after reading this review, I'll go with Itron methinks! Saves me having to make the choice of either nice graphics with an LCD, or nice look with a VFD...instead, I get a nice looking, graphic VFD...:D

As there are UK sales depts. too it'll be easier to buy than MO (that's one thing I wasn't looking forward to with MO - I live in the UK so shipping would be evil - plus, no doubt I'd have to pay duty fee's ontop!!!).

Anywho, cool display + very good review (told me everything I need to know).

    Matt

(oh, and Goo, if you're out there, I really like your case! So much that I'm gonna nick the design but just use sticky back film instead - I'm not confident enough to put bolts through my drives ;) ):D

    Availability Noritake VFD

    Hi UnLoadeD,
You want to know ... If anybody has a better (quicker) line on one of these for US peeps, plz lemme know.

And our US sales office said ".... I will ask the availability for this item, and our standard lead time is 14 to 16 weeks."

Nearly every US sales office has enquired, and we gave them the GOOD NEWS, that we here at IUK will try to fulfill our overseas orders in 10 to 12 working days FRO and dispatch to our North American sales offices. So allowing for shipment times too, means that I estimate 3 to 4 weeks should be this products worst case delivery. (However, I hope that the they will order several so that have a few for stock too!)

So please don't think that you'll have to wait forever and a day (well, 14 to 16 weeks!) we hope to do a bit better than that.

EDIT: PLEASE send your order to ITRON (UK) LTD at sales@noritake-itron.com We will then deliver from the UK.

EDIT: See later postings for more details.

Please stick with us, you'll have a fantastic little display eventually!

    Phil,
    Itron (UK) Ltd

The Cheeseman is doing a great job here for you all, I want to publicly thank him for bringing our new VFDs to your attention.

As he says we do have an Interface cable.... ready for this?

    IFCK0659FD-800A .... Phew!

That is a 6 way Molex to 9 way D, with 800mm cable length and a RED and BLACK wire for the 5V and Gnd (0v). They aren't a plug connection, so you will have to crimp a suitable connector or solder to a circuit board for the 5V connections. (Sorry CheeseMan the D shell is black not blue!!)

You can download a data sheet for this cable at http://www.noritake-itron.com/SubPages/vfcables.htm

Now the bit you all want to know; How Much.

For this I suggest you contact me at p.dakin@noritake-itron.com and I'll give you prices including delivery to your address.

I'm pleased The CheeseMan has also made the full data sheet available, it was due on our web pages tonight, but this link is better for you I think.

Any questions on the display and hardware, feel free to mail me direct if you wish, or post here for all to see (Good for FAQs)
Questions on the way CheeseMan made the display work so well are best addressed to him.
