now...imagine this....RIAA and the other companies that dont want you to P2P payed the swedish gov to seize their servers so they can get the list of IPs that used their service, and then each of the companies would go home with the part of the list that belongs to each and screw everyone that used the service.

anyway i saw the news and went "WTF!!!!!! OMFG" *looked around* "has hell frozen over?" *cleans his eyes, and looks again* "crap :("

anyway i dont know if they know this but if they were to block every illegal downloads and no one in the world would P2P they would not get the sales increasse they were looking for, i even think the sales would go down.

I believe sales already have gone down since they started suing large amounts of American college students 2 years ago (4 of my friends got sued, our school has had the most students sued yet)

By that measure, so is google when they allow Americans to type in "kiddie porn" or Saudi Arabians to type in "gay porn". Laws are different in different in countries, and Swedan has so far had the sense not to shut down people who provide a service that can be used for illegal purposes, but is intended for, and also can be used for legal things.

Yup, and google is called "Google" to tell you how many pieces of porn you can find on it ;p

The site is legal under Swedish law, I've used it a couple of times to get some demo's that were faster and easier to get at on it then on any of the big hosts. If the police find anything, it won't be due to law, it'll be due to some very very heavy handed media groups placing a lot of presure onto them.

wow look at that. in google i type "xmen 3 torrent" and it gives me a list of links to sites pointing to the torrent. how is that different from piratebay indexing torrents from other sites?
google indexes everything including porn, racist material and illegal torrents. where as piratebay just indexes torrents.
I fail to see why they are doing anything more illegal than google, except that google is a huge company that will and has faught anything that anyone has thrown at them. the RIAA are too scared to go after them.

You guys also forget that thepiratebay ran/run 6 very powerful trackers for the torrents, although these aren't illegal either. They're likely just looking through all of the servers for any data that might be illegal, then use that as an argument to confiscate the entire thing, permanently

They don't really need arguements, they have money, lawyers and the ability to buy politicians. Those things tend to trump mere annoyances like "arguements", "justifications" and, "rights".

Yet more news about piracy, when will it ever end. They really need to get it into thier thick skulls that the reason sales have slumped is not because of piracy (a small fraction of it is I suppose), but because the stuff they release is not only absolute **** most of the time, but also hidiously overpriced.

They will see more sales when they release software/cds/films/whatever at a realistic price, but they will never do that. Shareholders always want to get thier grubby hands on more stacks of cash, even though they have plenty.

What I hate is when they say, "We're doing this so artists get the money they deserve". Shut up, just say, "We are greedy *******s and want as much money as possible".

RIAA vs. John Doe was on all of the cases at my college, thats pretty much "RIAA vs. everyone who they want those IPs to match"

If they could ban the internet, they would. You think they'll change their business model to suit the global economy when they can just sue anyone with a new idea? Not a chance.

I don't think sueing and shutdowns are what people need to worry about. What people need to be concerned about is the RIAA and associtaed content providers pushing the hardware and software manufacturers across all platforms into a world where DRM cannot be circumvented without a great matter of effort, where it's risky and hard, and where there are large punishments with serious time in jail if you get caught. That's what they want, a world so locked down and under control that no-one would even dare mention the word piracy, and even if they did, it would be near impossible for it to happen on a scale beyond a handfull of people.

Its going to become harder to hack, it will become like Console chipping IMO, this will reduce the amount of hacking, but it wont stop it

That seems to be a good eqelibrium, if they assume only 5% of people are going to hack, they are still making boat loads

ATM i think the problem is hacking a DVD is so damn easy, there is a big problem
