What I said IS true. Yes you should let DHCP handle the leasing of IP's and their settings, but you don'talways need to/or are able to, for example maybe you need static ips for port forwarding.

Can I ask though how is what I said wrong?

alright, you and I were saying the same thing the whole time. I thought you were saying that you'd want to statically put 192.168.1.1 [or whatever] into each computer's configuration as the DNS server for them to use.

You and I were in agreement the entire time, but nowhere in your first post after mine did you mention DHCP, so I thought what you were saying what I just described in my first paragraph

No I am saying that you could enter your router's ip into the computer's DNS server spot in the TCP/IP settings. The router will just forward the DNS requests to the DNS servers the router has. It is much easier this way say if you have your modem get all its info by DHCP and your DNS servers change frequently(for some reason) and then you have static IP computers you just use the IP of the router as the computer's DNS server and you won't have to worry about changing it to all the new router's DNS servers.

EDIT: But, lets just drop this now, instead of confusing the people in this thread further. If you would like to finish this discussion some more, PM me please.

ok, then we weren't saying the same thing. I know exactly what you're saying, and I'm telling you that I don't believe all routers will forward DNS requests addressed to them on the LAN, therefore I just reccomend letting the LAN DHCP from the router handle it all, as it is just as failsafe as what you're saying, except mine is guaranteed to always work

Ok then, just in the large sum of routers I've setup they all have worked the way I have described. So then let's just call us both correct and end this matter. Conclusion: situation matters in the end, but there are for a large percent of the time two options.

pretty much every consumer-grade router comes with DHCP enabled by default. This is what let you use your desktop without having to do anything except plug it into the network

Assuming that you are posting here from home, via the router, then you must have DNS correctly set up, otherwise you wouldn't be able to access the site.

you need to tell us details about:
    1) how and where you use AOL
    2) what computer you're on now and how it connects to the internet
    3) where this router is and what it is being used for right now

That might be so, but you're not going to get much help if you don't answer anything asked of you. You managed to give a response to only one of FliesLikeABrick's three questions...

sorry to disappoint you hitman, but he actually didn't answer any of them ;)

If you really need a "DNS number" that bad, and you think that it is going to solve all of your problems, put in 4.2.2.2 and get back to us.

......wow, really? It is a tool that is small and used often for computer modding, often used with cutting discs for it.

Btw, don't double post, just edit the post before. That will save you some trouble with the mods.
