I have installed a Seagate 80 GB hard drive as a slave drive for data storage, but I am running out off space FAST. I am considering purchasing a 200 GB Drive to replace it. I also use this drive for the small number off games that I play. Can you people in cyberland please advise if it is possible to transfer the data that is on my current slave HDD to the new bigger Slave HDD....... or will I have to reload each program one at a time. Thank you for your time Regards. Terry
If you just transfer everything across, remove the old drive, the reassign the old drives letter to the new drive you should be fine. I'd reccomend reinstalling everything though.
Drive Image or Ghost Drive are just the thing you are looking for. But I agree that you would be better backing up your "Save Games" and then re-install.
Re, New HDD I have recently purchased a 300GB Maxtor DiamondMax 10 SATA2 [16MB] hard drive, but before I install it I would like further advice as I would like to use as a slave and not a master. The question is the jumper pins do I leave it in place or do I remove it as the instruction do not advise on how they should be if you are using it as a slave. I have placed a link here so that you can see and understand what I mean. http://www.macavoyt.freeserve.co.uk/Attach Serial and Power cables.wps Thank you for your time in this matter. Regards Terry. Re; HDD So what you are saying is do not worry about the jumper pins. Please try this link. http://www.macavoyt.freeserve.co.uk/Attach Serial and Power cables.wps I have retested this link and it is working Regards. Terry.
Linky no worky... it asks to download the thing... But it shouldn't matter... Question: have you tried plugging it in and booting? You'll see
Re;HDD Not till I get time to install it at the weekend Re Link what have I got to save the doc too or what to format. Thank you for a very informative web site.
Excuse me that I use Linux and OpenOffice and that I can't open your linky... Normally you link to a website or something... Something that opens in Firefox And no need for the sarcasm... Only trying to help... If you tried plugging it in, you would have seen that it works out of the box 99% of the time... No use asking for solutions to hypothetical questions...
I apologize if I have offended anyone. I am still gaining confidence into doing modifications, the next think to receive attention is the case. Terry
It just came across like sarcasm... My bad... You made a bit of a vague scentence and I misinterpreted... Maybe you ease back on the smiley usage ? I'd recommend just plugging it in and booting, if it doesn't work, just remove the jumper and reboot (shutdown first!) If your bios recognises it but it doesn't show in Windows, try to make a partition on it or (if you are unlucky) install the SATA drivers for the motherboard and try again But first try if it works "out of the box"
Re;HDD I shall try what you advised at the weekend and let you know on how things turn out. Time for bed as I have a 05:00am start tomorrow. Thank you for your time Terry
There are such things as Maser & Slave on SATA drives but it's not determined by jumpers. You should check your motherboard manual to double check, but if I'm not mistaken SATA 1 is Master/Boot and SATA 2 is Slave/Data. Hope it helps
Re; HDD Hello I have installed the new HDD over the weekend and re-installed a few of the games, everything seams to be working fine although I have noticed the the computer is slower in the start up process. Any ideas out there. Regards
Master/slave on sata uses 2 data cables, unlike IDE. I've just got a cable from my motherboard to each of my 2 SATA drives.
