News Paris homes get 2.5gb net connections

You guys don't seem to get the idea that this simply a trial. Just because 100 people are getting 2.5GBit connections to their home for just £50 a month doesn't mean that soon everybody will. It's almost certain that FT will not be making a profit from the £5000 or so they get every month by doing this. What they are doing is testing the technology to see how feasible it is to feed that much data to lots of homes. Then they are also testing new forms of media distribution such as HDTV over the net or perhaps movies on demand. And they are testing to see how people would use this kind of service if it were available.

Besides our internet backbone in the UK is made up of an optical network that runs at least 40GBit to the major cities. There's no need to wimax over a little of France's bandwidth over the Channel when we have plenty for ourselves.

Personally I think that eventually, phone, mobile phone, TV and internet providers will merge or buy each other out so that eventually we'll get everything through a big fat optical pipe to our homes or WiMaxed to our mobiles. The only network that will survive is the internet so people need to do these sorts of large scale tests for this kind of thing to happen.

 

On the note of using the gigabit stuff, most mobos now come with 2 GigE nics, just bond them together and thats 2gigabit of throughput. Plug into a decentish switch with a dual gigabit fiber WAN port and your sorted. -- all for about £200

 

Guys ya seem to be forgetting that you wont receive the full 2.5Gb, not even nearly that much. Most of the bandwidth is for digital tv and telephone. Still though, once you take that into account you've still got a hell of alot of bandwidth to play with!

 

so whats that, (30,000kb)30mb/s ? And I thought 10mbps / 1.2mb/s was fast! But finding a sever capable of that is another question...

 

Here in the States Verizon has been working feverishly to install a fiber network, though the speed I've heard are no were near that fast...only about 25mbps *Which I would glady take of my 6 I have now...*. I suppose the world is moving in the directiong of instant everything....hehe.

 

True, but if you downloaded multiple things from multiple servers then you could probably max it out... although lets face it, the only reason to want/have a 2.5Gb/s connection is for your e-penis and bragging rights!

No, it's 320Megabytes/s. That's a whole HD film in about 2 minutes .

And they will most likely give the customers custom hardware which acts as a digibox and internet swtich. Still don't see how they would pipe 2.5gb/s to any PC though.

What medium are they on?
I thought BR does like 25 GB a disc.

 

Obviously it depends on the format and compression but a dual layer blu-ray disc will be 50gb which would take 2m40s to download. I'm not sure what bit-rate HDTV is today but I figure that most movies would probably take around 2 minutes.

 

Aren't you guys mixing the terms GB/s - Gbps and MB/s - Mbps a lot?
Anyway, in the area where I live in the US (only slightly rural), I am lucky to get 28.8 Kbps with our crappy 20 year old phone services.

Don't think so... 2.5 Gb/s = 2500 Mb/s
2500/8 = 312.5 That means you have like 312.5 MB/s. So you need a perfectly set up SATA/300 hdd RAID system to not lose TOO much bandwidth.

 

Is RAM not a possibility around the bottleneck? Are/is it possible to store downloads in the RAM (ramdrive perhaps?) before saving to disc. We are seeing 1-2GB of RAM as standard these days which would store more than a HD movie + your operating system + apps thus preventing a bottleneck for the dataflow.

 

This makes me hate where I live even more.

I've only got 5mbps down, 386kbps up.

I don't hold a candle to that kind of speed.

 

But that's socialism, and McCarthy won't have any of that!
