Ok guys here is the start of my first computer mod: GUNDAM the next evolution. This project log as been started many times before, but here is the final log. This project may seem a bit big for my first time but thats my style. This is going to be a custom made wood case, but instead of using the most used forms of wood for computers, i am building the case out of balsa wood and before anyone says anything yes it will work. Anyway the computer is going to be based off of Gundam, the UC century of gundam, anyway here are the goals so far for this project. Custom wood case -Duel PC's- Main PC MP3 Jukebox Touchscreen Complete motorized parts 3-disk cd changer Custom on and off switch built into an gundam model Here are some pics of the models being used. And here are some of the work in progress pictures More updates soon
I like japanese machines a lot (althought Gundam.... hehe). Interesting concept. Some time ago someone tried a Gundam case in this forum. All chasis will be made of wood?
Yo, Love the idea. Never been a Gundam fan myself, but I did rock the Voltron pajamas when I was a kid, so I guess that kind of counts. Balsa huh? I can buy it, I used to build model airplanes with it, so I guess it could work if you're using the denser stuff. Will you be bondo-ing it, or applying some sort of resin over it once you're done, or just paint straigt onto the bondo? Also how big do you think this thing is going to end up being? Looks really cool so far, can't wait to see the motorization begin. Good luck.
It will be huge, 2 feet across 2 and a half tall. im going to use this paint that someone told me about that has resin mixed in that will soak into the wood to help strenghthen it.
Looking forward to seeing the progress on this one. I have always been a fan of Gundam, and have always wanted to see a Gundam-Themed Mod. By the way. Judging by the lack of foot posability (spelling?) in the pictures of the first model you are using, it is a 1/144 scale model. I was just sort of curious as to what purpose you had in mind for this, becuase personally, I would not use a low-detail model for display only Looks good so far, can't wait to see more
Actually, the first model shown is the RX-93 Nu Gundam from chars counterattack, that is just a picture of it, i dont have one yet, but for the project i am using a 1/100 master grade model, Oh and the second model is the Gundam GP-01
Ahh, ok. Was kinda hoping you weren't going to use a 1/100 scale model in this very nice Gundam choices though
What do you mean, why were you hoping i would not use 1/100, that and there is going to be a third gundam, from the UC century. any suggestions. besides the original.
Blah, That was a typo on my part. I meant to say 1/144, not 1/100. As for suggestions, I really have little to no creative talent, so I can't help ya out much there. Good luck on the project though
no i mean do you have any ideas for a third gundam to use. Also since you are a gundam fan I am looking for some gundam concept art and could use some help.
ahh, I see. Guess I read that wrong. I shall see what I can dig up As for a third gundam, I have always been a fan of Zaku II or Sazabi.
haha thats interesting. im a balsa fan myself but only when it comes to R/C modeling. if i was you i would buy some fiberglass to cover then whole thing when its finished. would make its much easier to finish and paint. goodluck with that project
Looking rather good. I love the mods that are more custom case builds than just chop-and-bondo jobs. The other 'mech mod was someone building a Dreadnaught from Warhammer 40k... Maybe when you're both done you should have a fight?
Ok here is the update. Here is a pic of the overall progress of the mod Here is how i am mounting the hard drives, and no the maxtor is not the hard drive im using is just a place holder. For the hard drive i am using pieces from an erector set i had as a child...ahhh the days of youth.... And for the mounting im just using a sliding shelf bracket.
Make sure you get some good cooling in there maybe switch to 5 1/4" HD's with those 3.5" to 51/4" adapters to keep the HDs cool. Balsa is pretty good at insulating things.
