that is quite ingenious. im going to have to do that. maybe even replace a few slot covers with mesh in a slot cover shape.

If you are going to sacrifice pci slots, do it with style!

Its a traditional mod. Take a cpu heatsink, find a way to mount it to a video card. Even that $7.99 Ultra AthlonXP heatsink pictured above keeps the x1900xtx under 50c under full load, and nearly silent to boot (stock was hitting 85c+). The downside--you lose your pci slots.

The simplest and most direct method to mounting a cpu heatsink is to drill and tap screw holes into the bottom of the heatsink that line up with the mounting holes of the graphics card. Then mount with screws.

This can get a little tricky with heatpipe heatsinks (don't want to drill into those), so you have to devise some sort of hold-down plate or lots of zip ties.

The second fan I mounted with a simple length of aluminum L channel with standoffs, from 2 spare mounting holes on the video card.

Mounting a cpu heatsink to a video card takes a little practice, so I'm not sure I would go do it on your $500 video card without some practice.

Your original concept is great because it voids no warranties and often gives a great burst of cooling. Stock fans on native video card coolers are often this tiny junk 50mm fans.

I though that the thing about slot coolers though were that they exhaust/intake air to/from the outside of the case..

Though this still works well :)

that's really funny. because I had just suggested the exact oposite

the moment I saw a great review of the new zalman VDF900 I thought - great QUIET cpu cooler!

as with your mod - the mount is the only real issue. of course it won't be an great cooler, and it wouldn;t work for any overclocking. but then again I was in a silent pc context, not OC city.
