I've seen people use them as PC switches before. Is it a momentary switch? or an Open/Close circuit switch?
(I'm throwing around terminology that may be misused, but I think it gets the point across, my apologies to any electronics buffs)

If it is momentary you can use it as a power switch, but if it is solid on or off, I would use it as a lock for your computer. Put it on the same circuit your power button is on, so you still use your power button, but you have to have the key to enable the power button.

(I would personally prefer to be able to use the key to enable the power button)

It doesn't matter if it's momentary or on-off. You can still use it like an ignition key. Just switch it on and then back to off and you computer is happy and working. :)

heh, "arming" the case with the key and then pushing the button to start it (like a Ferrari or s2000) would be awesome :) does it light up or anything? Those are usually cool pieces to hide an LED behind if the option is available :)

no LED or space for one :(

just a 'standard' chrome key switch thing... i guess could always make a ring around it to shine thru out of acrylic or similar

    How about?

How about mounting that key thingie INTO your power button so you'd actually have this kind of turn & push mechanism?
Might be pretty cool too... or might not, i've personally never tried it so i couldn't know :)

maybe put the keylock on one of the power switch wires so the switch only works with the key in? Just an idea

Hmm. Take your pos lead to the header, run it thru the keylock, then put a led between the keylock and the power button maybe? so you turn the key to enable the power button, a LED lights up, and then you can push the switch?

maybe linear can figure somethin out, hes tha shiznit when it comes to this stuff.

I replaced my power button with a key-switch. Turn clockwise then anticlockwise for power on. Leave in 'on' position for reset (atx).

A keyswitch would be great for an old AT machine...

Anyway, I think it's kinda useful. You could always rip my front bezel off to switch the PC on, or open the case and touch the mobo connectors for power, but my parents or sister aren't likely to do that!

Overall, not a perfect security solution, but a nice mod nonetheless.

i got an old key switch also on an AT PC, but have no keys to it either.
is it possible to MAKE the keys for it? i think the screwdriver thing would ruin all the charm in it.

if I can see a picture I might be able to get a key or tell you which key to get. I work with a lot of smaller locks and such.

    you can use it both

if you read my guide at christiaan.be then you could use it also on a ATX power suply, turn the key to turn on the pc, turn back to switch off pc, just replace the switch with the keyswitch, it works perfectly, i already tried it.
To mrtd: yo see this guide can be helpfull :p
